Newcastle United v Liverpool result - Rio Ngumoha nets dramatic late winner for Reds

Debutant Rio Ngumoha was Liverpool’s stoppage-time hero as The Reds overcame 10-man Newcastle United 3-2 in a thriller at St James’ Park.

Having seen Anthony Gordon sent off for a lunge on Virgil van Dijk on the stroke of half-time, Newcastle fell 2-0 down in the opening minute of the second half, when one of their previous transfer targets – Hugo Ekitike – slotted in his third goal in as many games for The Reds.

A match with the subplot of the Alexander Isak transfer saga had largely been in Newcastle’s favour prior to a goal against the run of play from Ryan Gravenberch, who struck from distance in the 35th minute.

Yet despite their numerical disadvantage, Newcastle thought they had battled back to secure a point when substitute William Osula prodded home in the 88th minute, after Bruno Guimaraes had dragged The Magpies back into the contest.

It was a Liverpool substitute who had the final say, though, with 16-year-old Ngumoha bending in his first top-flight goal to seal an extraordinary victory for the Premier League champions.

Here is Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk speaking to Sky Sports.

On the game: "We all know it’s a difficult place to come. There was a lot put on the fire this week, especially to get Newcastle fired up. It was expected. For us it was disappointing we conceded off two set-pieces, it shouldn’t happen, but overall a great three points, we move on.

"The pressure was put on. They had the quality. If you look at the traditional top six here last year, there’s only a couple that managed to beat them. I enjoy these atmospheres, I was looking forward to it, but we could have made it a little bit easier. We managed to get the three points, and we move on."

On Gordon’s red card: "I said to him if it’s not a sending off, then I don’t understand football. I felt it was strange the referee had to go to the monitor."

On Ngumoha: "It’s a dream debut for him. We stayed calm towards the end, tried to find the right solution to score a goal. I’m very pleased for Rio. He has to work hard and stay humble but he has to enjoy it – you can’t take these nights for granted."

What a remarkable match that was at St James' Park.

The 10 men of Newcastle thought they had forged an unbelievable comeback, having managed to hit back from 2-0 down to head into 11 minutes of stoppage time at 2-2.

Guimaraes and Osula got the goals to cancel out those of Gravenberch and Ekitike.

Yet in the 100th minute, with only their second shot of the second half, 16-year-old Ngumoha became the fourth-youngest goalscorer in Premier League history to make it 3-2 and seal a stunning Liverpool victory.

We're into the 102nd minute, and Newcastle put in a corner...

It's cleared out to the right flank, and with the hosts unable to keep it in play, Liverpool have a throw-in. That could be game over.

Oh. My. Word.

That is what champions do! Right at the death, Liverpool have scored, with their very first shot since Ekitike's goal, the Reds have seemingly found a way.

And it's the youngster Ngumoha, only just on as a substitute, who has done it, slamming home brilliantly after Salah's cross was expertly dummied by Szoboszlai.

Incredible.

Liverpool have not had a single attempt since Ekitike put them 2-0 up in the first minute of the second half.

Will that change in the dying embers?

It's been a frustrating night for Liverpool's talisman, who has hardly had a kick in a dangerous area.

And he has just lost out to Hall in a tussle on the touchline, with the Newcastle full-back winning a goal-kick.

We're just over halfway through stoppage time. Will there be one more twist in this thriller?

Elliott and Ngumoha have come on for Liverpool.

That is now twice in the space of two league matches that Liverpool have given away a two-goal lead. They came out on top in the end against Bournemouth, but coming away from St. James' Park with a positive result now is going to be far from easy.

For all the focus on Liverpool potentially buying Isak, it's at the other end that they look fragile.

As he has done all half, Livramento causes havoc with an arching throw into the box. Burn meets it on, and only the sharp reactions of Alisson prevents an attacker getting to the loose ball.

Wow! A whopping 11 minutes of stoppage time!

This has been a monumental effort from Howe's team. Shorn of the dismissed Gordon, and injured trio Schar, Joelinton and Tonali, they now head into added time with victory in their sights!

A long free-kick is pumped up towards the edge of Liverpool's area, where Burn is on hand to beat his markers and flick it on.

And, of all people, it's substitute Osula – the only player close to a recognised striker – who manages to get to it first and prod a finish beyond Alisson.

Incredible scenes at St. James' Park! It's 2-2!

That is a wonderful bit of play from Newcastle's goalscorer, as not only does he block Bradley's path into the box, but then nutmegs the full-back and manages to draw a foul, with the Liverpool defender going into the book.

Under a bit of pressure from Chiesa, Thiaw keeps his composure to calmly turn out of danger and get Newcastle going. That one pleased the home fans!

The changes and the injuries have just meant the rhythm of this match has slowed right down.

There will surely be a fair chunk of added time, though, so all hope is not lost for Newcastle, albeit it's around 20 minutes since we've had a shot from either side.

Newcastle use a concussion substitute to replace Schar with Thiaw, who recently joined the Magpies from Serie A giants Milan and is making his debut.

Another injury concern for Eddie Howe, then. When it rains, it pours!
