Newcastle United 1-2 Sunderland RECAP - Premier League result as Brian Brobbey hits late winner in Tyne-Wear Derby

Brian Brobbey’s 90th-minute winner completed Sunderland’s comeback over Newcastle in a pulsating Tyne-Wear Derby, extending The Black Cats’ supremacy over their bitter rivals.

Chemsdine Talbi had equalised for Sunderland earlier in the second half after Anthony Gordon’s early opener, while substitute Malick Thiaw saw a goal ruled out that would’ve restored Newcastle's lead.

It means Sunderland extend their unbeaten run over Newcastle in the league to 11 games and 15 years, while The Magpies last tasted victory over their rivals at home in 2010.

However, it didn’t look like that would be the case in the 10th minute when for the second time this season, it seemed the Tyne-Wear Derby could be decided by a catastrophic error.

Captain Luke O’Nien passed straight to Nick Woltemade from a goal kick and the German found Gordon who calmly slotted his shot past Melker Ellborg to give the hosts a deserved lead, with Sunderland struggling to get any foothold in the game early on.

However, the visitors grew into the contest with Tabli and Chris Rigg both going close, while Lewis Hall set up Sven Botman with a fantastic chance at the other end of the pitch in a barnstorming first half.

The second period began with a lengthy stoppage due to a head injury for Botman, followed by Lutsharel Geertruida reporting racist abuse from Newcastle fans that will be investigated by the Premier League.

But sustained Sunderland pressure finally paid off just before the hour mark when Talbi got the final touch in a goalmouth scramble following a weak punch from Aaron Ramsdale. Thiaw then thought he had hit back for Newcastle lead 18 minutes later when he directed the ball past Ellborg from a corner.

However, it was rightly ruled out for Jacob Murphy interfering from an offside position and with both sides throwing everything at finding a winner, it was Sunderland fans who celebrated when substitute Enzo Le Fee fed Brobbey in the six-yard box, and the forward turned home the rebound from his initial effort.

It caps a dreadful week for Newcastle after a heavy defeat to Barcelona knocked them out of the UEFA Champions League, while Sunderland have leapfrogged Eddie Howe’s side in the Premier League and now sit level on points with 10th-placed Brighton & Hove Albion.

Sunderland have done the double over Newcastle! The Magpies' 15-year wait for a league victory over their hated rivals continues, and they never even got close to equalising in injury time after that brilliant Brobbey winner.

The bragging rights are red and white, those three points mean Sunderland leapfrog Newcastle in the Premier League table too.

Burn won the header from that free-kick but Willock was beaten to the loose ball! However, Reinildo commits a foul so Newcastle can go again.

Newcastle haven't been able to get the ball upfield for a couple of minutes, but after a foul on Hall they will have one last chance to launch it into the mixer.

It will probably be closer to 10 following that goal and these changes, though. Brobbey took his shirt off to celebrate and picked up a yellow card, but it won't matter and Le Bris immediately removes him and the other Sunderland goalscorer Talbi from the fray.

Newcastle lost the ball in midfield and Sadiki drove the ball forwards then found Le Fee. Hall didn't get out quickly enough to close down the substitute, and Le Fee capitalised by firing the ball into the six-yard box to Brobbey.

His first-time shot was saved by Ramsdale but it bounced straight back to the Dutchman and he made no mistake the second time.

Gordon exits with a shake of the head after helping to defend one last corner, Sunderland will enter what should be a lengthy stoppage time period on the front foot. Wissa is the substitute coming on.

Play stopped around the Botman incident for Anthony Taylor to speak to both managers, and we've now learned that he was informing them that it was because Geertruida reported racist abuse from Newcastle fans.

Le Bris has made his first substitute, introducing Enzo Le Fee who passed a late fitness check to take his place on the bench.

Sunderland finally got on the attack but shots by Diarra and Talbi failed to find their mark.

It's been 10 minutes since Sunderland threatened Ramsdale's goal, and Newcastle look more likely to score right now. Though maybe this is a game that neither side deserves to lose.

The Magpies will get the next attack either way, as Alderete made little attempt to play the ball when tackling Will Osula.

A long raking pass finds Barnes and he races towards the goal before looking to curl the ball around Ellborg and into the far corner.

Instead, his shot is well over the bar.

Will he have the crucial intervention?

Lewis Hall fired a free kick into a crowded six-yard box and Thiaw rose highest to head home, Anthony Taylor doesn't look convinced.

Talbi leaves Willock for dead and fires a pass into the feet of Brobbey who has his back to goal. It looks like a fantastic chance just six yards out but the Dutchman can neither turn and shoot from a good angle, or find a teammate.

In fairness, he was very well-marshalled by Thiaw.

Surely there is another goal in this one. A speculative Barnes shot is heading wide before it cannons into Lutsharel Geertruida, who deflects it back across goal and just past the post.

Ellborg was in trouble if that landed a foot to the left.
