Sunderland 0-0 Manchester United result - Michael Carrick's side miss chance to guarantee third with their first scoreless draw of season

Manchester United missed an opportunity to guarantee a third-place finish by picking up their first 0-0 draw of the campaign against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Michael Carrick’s side never really got going and only managed to gain a point thanks to the brilliance of goalkeeper Senne Lammens and the woodwork denying Lutsharel Geertruida.

Sunderland should have opened the scoring after just six minutes, with Noah Sadiki missing a golden opportunity to score his first goal in red and white.

Sadiki was played through on goal by a brilliant Enzo Le Fee pass but his strike was weak and straight at Lammens, who was equal to it.

The hosts continued to dominate the first half, with Lammens called into action a number of times.

Carrick’s side struggled to get out past Sunderland’s press, meaning they were unable to create any clear-cut chances.

Joshua Zirkzee went closest for the visitors in the first half, heading just over the bar from Amad Diallo’s cross.

United improved at the start of the second half but Sunderland again should have taken the lead with an hour played.

Le Fee did brilliantly to wriggle free before playing Brian Brobbey in on goal but the Dutch striker was denied by another fantastic Lammens save.

Geertruida came inches away from a winner with 20 minutes to play, curling a brilliant strike against the post.

Matheus Cunha missed two glorious chances right at the death, including firing straight at Robin Roefs, who was equal to the effort.

Sunderland continued to push for the win but were unable to find the back of the net, leaving them five points off seventh-placed Brighton, who eased past Wolves at home.

United are still in the driving seat to finish in third despite dropping two points because Liverpool had earlier drawn with Chelsea.

Carrick's team can guarantee third place at home to Nottingham Forest next weekend, while Sunderland visit Everton next.

It ends all square with the points shared at the Stadium of Light.
