Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Brighton & Hove Albion result – Georginio Rutter scores injury-time equaliser to deny Spurs huge win in Premier League

Tottenham remain in the Premier League relegation zone after Georginio Rutter scored an injury-time equaliser for Brighton, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

Xavi Simons had looked to have scored an important winner for Spurs in their relegation battle, only for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to be left stunned by late leveller.

Roberto De Zerbi was looking for a first win in charge of Spurs against his former side.

However, Brighton came into the game with five wins in their last six matches and were only denied an opening goal by Micky van de Ven sliding the ball off the goal-line.

A classy chip by winger Xavi Simons created the 39th minute opener as defender Pedro Porro headed home.

However, the Seagulls were ahead in first half stoppage time after Pascal Gross’ cross across the pitch was expertly volleyed home by Kaoru Mitoma.

Spurs thought they had found a winning goal on 77 minutes when substitute Lucas Bergvall won the ball outside the box and found Simons who turned two defenders before finding the top corner.

Tottenham were forced back during nine minutes of injury-time and Brighton eventually found an equaliser.

Defender Kevin Danso was dispossessed inside the box by Jan Paul van Hecke and Rutter netted the late equaliser.

Tottenham are now 15 games without a win and are risk of being cut adrift in the Premier League relegation zone when West Ham and Nottingham Forest play in the forthcoming days.

It was a farewell moment as the Seagulls fans showed their appreciation for the work De Zerbi did for them.

Tottenham will look back on this game as two points dropped. The defending in injury-time was terrible.

Eventually Danso lost the ball when he should have cleared his lines and Brighton capitalised.

Tottenham are held to a 2-2 draw and are 15 games without a win. Gray saw his late effort saved at the death.

The equaliser was coming as Spurs failed to clear their lines. Van Hecke battles for the ball inside the box and then pulls back for Rutter to net.

Brighton should have been level again. The Spurs players were left watching a ball float over their heads to Kadioglu awaiting at the back post.

The Brighton player looked certain to score before guiding his volley into the side-netting.

The Spurs substitute thought he was through on goal. Tel controlled the ball before forcing a good save from Verbruggen. However, the effort wouldn’t have counted as the off-side flag was up.

This will feel like an eternity for Spurs fans as they hang on for what would be a huge three points.

Minteh floated a lovely ball in to the back post where Wieffer and Kadioglu get in each other’s way as they both go for the ball.

The goal scorer has serious cramp and is in pain. However, Spurs have ran out of substitutes. The game is stopped again so that Simons can receive treatment.

Kostoulas is a little eager to make an impact and dives in with a high foot on goalkeeper Kinsky. He’s lucky to escape a booking.

Simons also receives treatment for cramp.

An unbelievable strike by Simons. Bergvall wins the ball on the edge of the Brighton box and finds Simons who cuts inside two players and fires across goal into the top corner. Simons is booked for a wild celebration with the fans.

Brighton make a triple change.

Welbeck replaced by Rutter; Hinshelwood for O'Riley; Mitoma for De Cuyper.

A moment that won’t settle the nerves of Spurs fans. Welbeck closes down a back-pass and Kinsky has to make a rushed clearance.

Moments later Kinsky has to clutch a Minteh cross.

The Spurs substitute almost scores with his first touch of the game. The ball falls for Palhinha on the edge of the box and his driven effort takes a heavy deflection, forcing Verbruggen into a smart save.
