TOTTENHAM RELEGATION FEARS GROW AFTER HOME LOSS TO NEWCASTLE

Tottenham Hotspur’s relegation worries grew on Tuesday following their 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United.

Newcastle started much the strongest, with Joe Willock having a goal ruled out for offside just moments before Malick Thiaw prodded home to open the scoring on the stroke of half-time.

Spurs improved markedly after the break though and eventually equalised from their first corner of the game, with Archie Gray tapping home from close range.

But the lead was short-lived as Newcastle went ahead again minutes later, with Jacob Ramsey capping off a brilliant team goal with his first for the club.

And try as Tottenham might, they were unable to find another equaliser as they slipped to their eighth game in a row without a win.

The final whistle was met with loud boos from the home fans and chants against manager Thomas Frank as the relegation fears grow this season, with the team now just five points off the bottom three and with a North London derby coming up next against Arsenal.

FERDINAND: NOT ALL FRANK'S FAULT

Although most of the frustration from Tottenham fans has been directed towards Thomas Frank, former Spurs striker Les Ferdinand says the burden doesn't fall solely on the manager's shoulders.

"If [the players have] got any pride and self-respect, they'll know it's not just about the manager, it's about them as well," Ferdinand told TNT Sports. "You can point the finger at the manager all the time.

"They need to look at themselves now, and they should have been looking at themselves all season and saying: 'What should we do to get out of this situation?' It's been happening all season. The first half performances have been nowhere near the performances in the second half."

Spurs have just won two points in their last six games, the fewest amount of points by any Premier League team over that span.

FRANK CONFIDENT OF HIS JOB SECURITY

Despite the displeasure directed towards him from Tottenham's fans after the defeat to Newcastle, Thomas Frank remains confident he's the right man for the manager job.

When asked if he expects to lose his job before Tottenham's next game against Arsenal in 12 days time and sittng just above the relegation zone, he was adamant, telling TNT Sports: "No, I spoke to [the club's hierarchy] yesterday, so no."

Frank explains that the slew of injuries his squad has faced has disrupted the rhythm of what he's tried to build, which was on show this evening. Tottenham had 11 players missing for Tuesday's game and lost Wilson Odobert midway through the first half, with Frank saying his team is "not a full team in confidence and flow."

But he stressed to the Spurs fans that he and the players will do whatever it takes to get themselves out of the situation they find themselves in.

"Definitely understand we're not in a top position and we need to do everything to work hard to get out," he said.

"I understand the frustration and the easiest thing is to point at me. That's fair, that's part of the job. Unfortunately I also know one thing, I'll work day and night and do everything I can to turn it around. But it's not down to only one person, we were in this situation last year."

'HAVEN'T BEEN GOOD ENOUGH'

The defeat was another poor result for Spurs as they slip further down the Premier League table.

Thomas Frank's position as manager has come into question amongst Spurs fans and former Spurs striker says frustration has built slowly over the season.

"You heard the groans at the end of the game. The boos were very loud, and they have been all season. A lot of the supporters have lost faith in what Frank is doing here," TNT Sports pundit Ferdinand said.

"Difficult because he's worked most of the season without any of his creative players. He's been really unfortunate in terms of that. But the performances at home just haven't been good enough, and that's what counts."

DIFFERING EMOTIONS

While it is dismay and anger Tottenham fans are feeling, it is one of jubilation for Newcastle fans.

The win moves them to 36 points and away from the relegation zone themselves. After the full-time whistle, an ecstatic Eddie Howe can be seen pumping his fists and celebrating with the travelling Magpie fans.

"It was a good performance from us tonight. Really straight game. I think Tottenham scored against the run of play. Then really big credit to the lads, because at that moment the game could have got away from us. But they got the second goal, responded really well. Thankfully defended the last few minutes really well," Howe told TNT Sports.

"We've played really well today. We had a number of shots, a number of chances. We dominated in the first half. The lads kept going and had to do it the hard way. I think we fully deserved to win."

'DESPERATE TIMES CALL FOR DESPERATE MEASURES'

The defeat to Newcastle is Tottenham's eighth in a row in the Premier League and a relegation battle could well be on their hands to end the season.

And former Spurs striker and TNT Sports pundit Les Ferdinand says tonight's performance was a result of recent bad results.

"Confidence is a major thing in football. Tottenham are lacking any sort of confidence," he said. "All their mavericks, their creative players, are missing. It’s not good enough. It’s not good enough at this moment in time. Desperate times call for desperate measures."

Former Spurs player and TNT Sports pundit Glenn Hoddle had a similar sentiment, saying it's time for the club to acknowledge the battle they're facing.

"You've got to say what it is and they are in a relegation fight," he said. "The players have to understand that and the fans have to understand that. It is the reality and you have to scrap for every single point."

The final whistle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is met with loud boos by the home fans.

The stadium has plenty of empty seats, with many leaving before the final whistle, but the ones who have stayed are clearly not happy with the manager and players.

Just a reminder: if West Ham hold out to beat Manchester United, Spurs will be just three points off the relegation zone.
