West Ham United 1-5 Chelsea result: Estêvão excels for five-star Blues as Hammers slide to derby defeat in first home game

Chelsea put on a ruthless display against West Ham on Friday night, with Brazilian teenager Estevao starring on his full debut in a 5-1 hammering at the London Stadium.

Estevao came into the team just ahead of kick-off after Cole Palmer was forced out of the pre-game warm up through injury, and he started nervously, giving the ball away in the lead-up to a stunning long-range opener from West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta.

The Hammers’ tails were up after such a dramatic start to their first home game of the season, and they had the ball in the back of the net again early on, only for Niclas Fullkrug’s shot to be ruled out due to an offside.

But Chelsea soon clicked into gear themselves, equalising through Joao Pedro’s header and taking the lead thanks to a 23rd-minute close-range finish from Pedro Neto in a dramatic start to the fixture.

Estevao’s best moment came with a little over half an hour gone, with the Brazilian picking up a second ball and tearing through a bamboozled West Ham defence before laying it on a plate for Enzo Fernandez to make it 3-1.

And things went from bad to worse for a shell-shocked West Ham after the interval, as Chelsea scored twice in quick succession from corners. Goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was largely at fault on both occasions, with Moises Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah the players to take advantage.

The stands were largely empty come full-time as a demoralising start to the season continues for the Hammers - who lost 3-0 at Sunderland last weekend - but for Chelsea the future looks particularly bright thanks to their new Brazilian sensation.

Chelsea have made a statement of intent this evening, traveling across London for a Friday-night derby fixture, and leaving with all three points, earned in pretty emphatic fashion.

Summer arrivals João Pedro and Estêvão were among the stand-out performers for Maresca’s side, with the absence of the injured Cole Palmer not having too much of an impact in the end.

It’s not going to be the story of the game, but West Ham have done well to stop the rot after going 5-1 down. At one stage it looked like they were going to let their heads drop completely, but the home side have got stuck in to try and prevent further damage. That’s not a team who are lacking faith in the manager, but I’m not sure the same can be said for the fans, most of whom are already wandering away down Stratford Walk.

Play comes to a halt while Neto recovers from a knock to the knee. He’s going to be okay to continue and Chelsea have a free-kick in a decent area out wide.

The London Stadium will be virtually empty come full-time at this rate, with so many fans already having left. It’s a sad sight in what is West Ham’s opening home match of the season.

The traveling fans give a standing ovation to their 18-year-old Brazilian as he makes way, replaced by another young star, Jamie Gittens.

Estêvão should make it six, but overplays after being played in down the right flank. The Brazilian’s deflected effort dribbles through to the keeper and he gets an earful from Pedro to boot, with the forward thinking he should have passed. That seems a stretch – the shooting opportunity was definitely the right decision from the youngster, he just executed it wrong.

Walker-Peters replaces Soucek for West Ham and almost scores seconds after coming on, seeing a shot cleared off the line after Wilson had held the ball up in the box but opted to pass rather than get a shot of his own away.

Fofana, James and Hato come on for Chelsea, with the latter making his debut for the club.

Sanchez pulls off a spectacular save, tipping the ball over the bar, but the flag goes up seconds later for offside so it wouldn’t have stood anyway.

West Ham’s captain is still working his socks off in an attempt to stop the rot. West Ham have been better in the last few minutes, although admittedly that’s not hard.

West Ham assistant coach Bruno has been booked for his behaviour down in the dugout. It’s an inauspicious night for the Hammers.

A deep cross towards the back post is met by the leaping Wilson, but his header isn’t the best and drifts off target. His reaction shows that he really should have done better with that.
