West Ham United 1-1 Manchester United result – Benjamin Sesko's stoppage-time volley earns visitors dramatic draw in East London

Manchester United super-sub Benjamin Sesko came off the bench to score in the last minute of stoppage time as Michael Carrick returned to his old club West Ham and snatched a point in dramatic fashion at the London Stadium.

Two sides in good form went head-to-head at the London Stadium, and for much of the game, it looked like they had effectively cancelled each other out until the hosts took the lead in the second half. But as the game headed into stoppage time, it looked like the points would head to relegation battlers West Ham before Sesko came off the bench to break Hammers' hearts deep into added time.

After a first half that offered little in the way of quality or goal-mouth action, West Ham made the breakthrough four minutes after the break. Tomas Soucek robbed Luke Shaw in the middle of United's half, then set Jarrod Bowen down the right flank. The England forward then crossed for Soucek, who superbly flicked the ball past Senne Lammens in the United goal to put the hosts ahead.

United looked laboured in their build-up and struggled to create clear-cut chances. Midfielder Casemiro did find the net with a smart header from a Kobbie Mainoo cross, but the Brazilian was marginally offside and the goal was ruled out after a VAR check.

As the match headed into the final moments, West Ham looked the more likely to add to the scoresheet, but in a dramatic twist, Sesko produced a brilliant flicked volley from a Bryan Mbeumo cross to find the top corner and secure a share of the points for United.

The draw ensured that United remained in the UEFA Champions League qualifying places by staying in fourth. West Ham, meanwhile, only make up one point on Nottingham Forest as they stay in 18th.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick was feeling a little conflicted after he saw his side snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat at West Ham.

While he was happy to see his side avoid defeat, he admitted he wasn't happy with the overall level of his team's performance.

"I think we're a bit disappointed," he told TNT Sports' Liam MacDevitt after the match.

"We've definitely not been at our best, and it's at those times when you're really, probably not totally at your best, where you can find a way and obviously keep the clean sheet and maybe, you know, maybe take the game and move on. But yeah, so a little bit frustrated with that.

"We've had five games now, and we've been at a really good level. It's a tough place to come, they made it difficult, and we just didn't quite have that sharpness or that spark, really, to find the answers too often."

Despite his disappointment at the team's overall performance, Carrick was keen to accentuate the positives, and paid tribute to his side for persisting through stoppage time before eventually snatching a last-gasp equaliser to earn a point.

"In the end, big credit to the boys," he said.

"The spirit again and a late goal when we needed it. It's a great quality to have. So we'll take the point and we'll move on."

Carrick also had a word for his former club, as he shared his hope that they'll win their battle to escape the relegation trapdoor this season.

"Yeah, for sure," he said.

"Now we're kind of done with them, I'd love them to stay up. It's big part of my life, and growing up and great memories here. So hopefully they do (stay up)."

Substitute hero Benjamin Sesko admitted that, while he was pleased to earn a point for his side at West Ham, he wasn't happy that they had to settle for a point after a sub-par showing on the road in London.

"I'm happy with my finish, but yeah, not so happy with the draw, because I know we deserve the win because we were fighting," he told TNT Sports after the game.

"Unfortunately, just the day comes when you're a bit unlucky. Maybe the intensity was not exactly ther, as it should be. But yeah, we were fighting. In the end, we got a draw, which is really important.

"We are working together, no matter what is happening. If we are behind, if we're in front, we are always fighting. As I said again, today was important to get this draw, because it was a difficult game for us. They were dangerous on the counter attacks ... But yeah, we managed to finish it with 1-1."

"I think we just have to keep on going, like we were doing the last (few) games," he continued.

"We have to keep in mind that we have to breathe for each other, and we have to we have to take care in every single situation, every second of the game, to be focused, to be on point, and obviously when the chances are coming, to finish them."

It all happened in the blink of an eye, as Benjamin Sesko brilliantly flicked Bryan Mbeumo's cross into the top corner to give Manchester United a late, late equaliser at the London Stadium.

United keep on going and, after a great switch of play by Amad, Mbeumo whips in a left-footed cross from the right wing and super-sub Benjamin Sesko executes a quite brilliant flick to volley the ball into the top corner.

It's a fantastic finish, and it's 1-1!

United surge forward and Bruno Fernandes whips in a teasing cross that is absolutely begging to be headed into the net.

Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee, fresh off the bench, gets his head to it, but his effort drops mere inches wide of the back post with Hermansen beaten.

That's a HUGE let-off for West Ham in stoppage time.

West Ham carve United open on the counter-attack again and Adama Traore surges through the middle.

Just as he's about to shoot at goal, Yoro slides in and makes a goal-saving block.

It's a brilliant bit of defending from the United substitute, and it keeps United's faint hopes of a point alive.

Callum WIlson shows a clean pair of heels to Yoro as he charges into the penalty area.

His shot is blocked behind for a corner, but that was a brilliant turn of pace from the West Ham substitute.

There will be SEVEN MINUTES of additional time at the end of this game.

The Hammers aren't home and hosed just yet. There's still some defending to be done, and the goalscorer is leading by example, by throwing himself in the way of Bryan Mbeumo's goal-bound effort.

That's superb defending from the Czech midfielder, who has had an outstanding game for the hosts.

We have five minutes, plus stoppage time, here in Stratford, and the West Ham faithful are in full voice.

This would be a massive win for their season, and the fans are doing their bit from the stands as they lend their vocal support to the players on the pitch.

Fernandes' 70th-minute booking slipped the net during the first batch of substitutions. The Hammers midfielder will need to mind his P's and Q's in the final minutes here.

Chances are at a premium for United at the moment, and Bryan Mbeumo has a half-chance at the back post, but he can't get up high enough to head it back across goal and his header goes wide for a goal kick.

United have a lot of the ball, but aren't creating too much in the way of chances.

United are enjoying the lion's share of the possession now, but West Ham are running their socks off closing down United players and denying them space to create anything really dangerous.

A shot from distance is easily saved by Hermansen, but that's really been all United have offered beyond Casemiro's offside goal.
