Premier League and World Cup referee Anthony Taylor announces retirement after officiating in 831 matches - 'The scrutiny is constant'

Taylor brings the curtain down on an illustrious career after taking charge of 668 professional matches in English football, including 432 top-flight matches.

In total, Taylor officiated in 831 matches over a span of more than 20 years.

His final assignment came on the global stage, officiating the 2026 FIFA World Cup last-16 clash between Portugal and Spain in the United States on July 6 before calling time on a career that spanned more than a decade at the highest level.

Taylor added: "The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.

"I want to express my deepest gratitude to my two assistants Gary [Beswick] and Adam [Nunn], my refereeing colleagues and everyone connected with the game for all their support over the years.

"Most importantly, I want to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support throughout the immense sacrifices this career has demanded."

Born in Wythenshawe, Manchester, Taylor rose through the English refereeing system before making his Premier League debut in 2010.

Throughout his domestic career, Taylor was entrusted with some of English football's biggest occasions, officiating every major domestic cup final.

His honours include the 2015 League Cup final, the 2015 Community Shield, the 2017 and 2020 FA Cup finals, and the 2018 Championship play-off final, underlining the confidence placed in him by football's governing bodies.

Taylor's influence extended far beyond the Premier League. A FIFA-listed referee for 14 years, he officiated at two World Cups (2022 and 2026), two European Championships (2020 and 2024), and two Club World Cups (2022 and 2025).

Across 163 international matches, he was selected for some of the most prestigious fixtures in world football, including the 2020 UEFA Super Cup, the 2021 UEFA Nations League final, the 2022 Club World Cup final, the 2023 Europa League final and the 2024 UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Howard Webb, chief refereeing officer at ProRef, paid tribute to Taylor's contribution, saying: "Anthony has been a fantastic servant to the game over many years, both domestically and on the international stage. He has been repeatedly trusted to officiate in the biggest games including Portugal against Spain in this summer’s World Cup which ultimately capped off an outstanding career.

"He's consistently demonstrated over a sustained period why he is one of the best and most successful officials that English football has ever produced, but it’s not just his on-field achievements that see him as a role model to many.

"The professionalism he’s shown and the support for his colleagues and the next generation of officials looking to follow in his footsteps is testament to his character.

"We thank him for his immense contribution to the game and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career."

His career was also marked by repeated experiences of abuse from supporters. In 2023, after refereeing the UEFA Europa League final between Sevilla and Roma in Budapest, Taylor and his family were targeted by angry Roma fans at the airport.

The incident led to widespread condemnation and renewed debate about the treatment of match officials.

Speaking afterwards on the High Performance Podcast, Taylor called for greater understanding towards referees, saying: "Just more understanding and more empathy [is needed]."

He added: "So again, yes, mistakes are made and we're far from perfect. Far from perfect. But there's many other facets that contribute to the result of a football match."
