Eddie Howe leaves Newcastle United with immediate effect after five years in charge at St James' Park

Eddie Howe has left Newcastle United after five years at the St James' Park helm. The 48-year-old succeeded Steve Bruce in charge of The Magpies back in November 2021 and led the club to Carabao Cup glory.

Howe's job had been at risk following a disappointing 12th-placed finish in the Premier League last season.
The Magpies reported on Friday that coaches Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, along with head of performance Dan Hodges, would also leave the club.
Howe issued his own statement, which read: ”After a period of personal reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step away from my role as head coach of Newcastle United.
”After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break.
”Although it’s been incredibly difficult to make this decision, I know in my heart that it’s the right one. I have always put the best interests of Newcastle before my own in every single decision I have made whilst I’ve been here, and this one is no different.
”It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have been the manager of Newcastle United."
Howe, who took over in the hot seat from Steve Bruce in 2021, wrote his name into Newcastle folklore when he led the team to League Cup glory in 2025.
Their 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the final at Wembley meant a first trophy for the club since their 1969 Fairs Cup win and a first domestic success since FA Cup glory in 1955.
Howe's five years in charge will undoubtedly be seen as successful overall.
Newcastle finished in fourth place in the Premier League in the 2022/23 season, and fifth in the 2024/25 campaign, which both times saw Newcastle qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

But last season proved to be more of a struggle, with Newcastle finishing in 12th place and discontent among parts of the fanbase.
Matthias Jaissle is expected to succeed Howe in the Newcastle dugout. Jaissle is the current head coach of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli.

The new man in charge will have to hit the ground running too, with Newcastle opening their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on August 23.
Newcastle's first league game in front of the TNT Sports cameras in the new season will be at home to Bournemouth on September 5.
