Celtic 3-1 Hearts recap - Scottish Premiership secured by Daizen Maeda's late strike as visitors suffer last-day heartbreak

An unforgettable Scottish Premiership season fittingly ended dramatically, with late Celtic goals securing the title at the expense of long-time leaders Hearts.

Towards the end of a nervous first-half with few chances, visiting skipper Lawrence Shankland met a corner at the back post to give the Edinburgh side the lead.

But just as in midweek, a Celtic penalty in stoppage time changed things, with Kieran Tierney's cross striking the arm of Alexandros Kyziridis and Arne Engels' kick was squeezed under Alexander Schwolow to level the score.

As the game wore on, Celtic were increasingly encamped in the Hearts half and almost went in front when Kelechi Iheanacho struck the outside of the post with Schwolow beaten.

The crucial moment came three minutes from time when Daizen Maeda diverted home substitute Callum Osmand's cross. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but replays showed Maeda, and not Osmand, was offside for the initial pass, before the ball was pulled back for the Japanese star to put away.

As Hearts threw everything forward towards the end of stoppage time, Celtic cleared and Osmand was allowed to run half the length of the field unchallenged before scoring into an empty goal. This prompted a pitch invasion from delirious fans which led to a slightly-abridged ending, 30 seconds before the end of the allotted eight minutes of injury time.

The 3-1 win saw Celtic finish two points clear of Hearts after Derek McInnes' side had led the league for 250 days.

Maybe the most memorable end to a season in Scottish football ends with the trophy going to Glasgow's East End.

But he cannot steer the header back across goal and it goes out for a goal kick.

The replay was clear, Osmand was not offside when he received the ball and cut back for the Japanese striker to turn home.

Osmand's cross is turned home by Maeda. They will check with VAR. Maeda was offside from the original pass but Osmand was not. This could be a goal.

But the Hearts substitute could not deflect the ball home.

Maeda turned and aimed a shot at the far post, but Osmand came in to deflect with a header which went over the bar. Osmand was offside and it looked like Schwolow would have kept out the shot anyway.

The midfielder's effort was aimed centrally but the keeper had to get up to tip it over.

The former Leicester man's first touch is exquisite taking the ball away from the defender and his effort beats Schwolow but comes back off the post.

He was cautioned for the foul on the edge of the area.

It looked too close to go for the side-footed dipper but was three or four yards wide anyway.

But with little pressure, his first touch is poor, and his ensuing shot is easily cleared. Hearts give away a foul on the edge of their area just left of centre straight afterwards though.
