Inter 5-2 Roma recap - Serie A leaders run rampant smashing Champions League chasing opposition at the San Siro

Lautaro Martinez netted twice and Hakan Calhanoglu smashed home a goal of the season contender as Serie A leaders Inter romped to victory over Roma.

In a match beginning under the pall of the events in Bosnia in midweek, with Azzurri scapegoat Alessandro Bastoni starting for the Nerazzurri, it did not take long for spirits to rise.

Marcus Thuram, who has struggled in the absence of striker partner Martinez, drove into the area and slipped a ball in the path of the Argentinian, who clipped home from six yards out.

Gianluca Mancini levelled five minutes before the break heading home Devyne Rensch’s cross, but Roma paid the penalty for giving Hakan Calhanoglu space 30 yards from goal as his swirling and dipping effort beat Mile Svilar.

After the break, Inter quickly took the game away from their opponents with Thuram expertly laying on another goal for Martinez before flicking home a header from a corner at the front post.

Nicolo Barella then added another goal before Lorenzo Pellegrini got a consolation of sorts for Roma.

The win puts Inter nine points clear at the top of Serie A, ahead of the meeting between second and third on Monday as Milan travel to Napoli. Roma remain in sixth.

You get the impression both teams would have been happy to see zero appear on the board.

Malen drove into the box and he was dispossessed with the ball dropping for Pellegrini who stroked a ball just inside the corner leaving Sommer with no chance.

But he blasted the ball over under little pressure from 12 yards out.

Goalscorers Calhanoglu and Thuram, who also set up two, are brought off. Susic and Esposito come on.

Roma hesitated on the edge of their box and Barella burst into the area, tried to pass to Thuram, but saw the ball blocked and return to his path - he then stroked home.

He is the first player to be booked.

Part of a double change as he is brought off for Bonny and Darmian replaces Bastoni.

A deserved goal from Thuram, he meets Calhanoglu's corner at the front post and flicks it home inside the far post.

He is doing his bit at the back, again nodding the ball out of Martinez's path, but Roma are under siege.

On the break Thuram drove towards the penalty area and using Dumfries' run as a decoy he slipped the ball perfectly into the path of his strike partner, who stroked home.

Martinez was ready to head home Dumfries' cross at the box post but the half-time substitute flicked the ball away from him.
