Real Madrid 2-1 Atletico result - Federico Valverde and Rodrygo fire clinical Blancos into Supercopa de Espana final showdown with Barcelona

Federico Valverde struck one of the goals of the season as Real Madrid edged past city rivals Atletico 2-1 to set up a mouthwatering 'El Clasico' Supercopa de Espana final with Barcelona in Jeddah.

The Blancos captain hammered home a blistering free-kick from 25 yards inside the first two minutes before playing provider for Rodrygo to net a clinical chipped second on 55 minutes.

Diego Simeone's Atletico hit back three minutes later when Alexander Sorloth rose highest to nod home Giuliano Simeone's cross.

But despite having plenty of possession and opportunities, they ultimately paid the price for a lack of cutting edge as Julian Alvarez nudged their final opening a yard wide with the chance to send a pulsating tie to penalties.

Cup holders Barcelona booked their spot in the first major final of the season with a 5-0 drubbing of Athletic Club on Wednesday night.

The three previous finals have been contested between Spain's big two at the King Abdullah Sports City, with Barcelona winning 3-1 in 2023 and 5-2 last year and Real Madrid running out 4-1 winners in 2024.

Alvarez works the corner short to Llorente and his swerving shot from distance just eludes the left-hand post of Courtois, who was nowhere near it if it dropped inside post. But it drops the wrong side of the post. So near, yet so far.

But he ends up dashing straight into the opposition roadblock and is penalised for foul play. Conditions seems to be slowly sapping the life out of this contest as Bellingham can't direct a driven cross goalwards.
