Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Crystal Palace live - FA Cup fourth round latest as Devenny doubles Eagles' lead over underdogs

Doncaster made a valiant defensive effort in the first half of their fourth-round FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace, frustrating the visitors who were unable to penetrate the final third in any meaningful way, despite completely dominating possession.

In the end, it was a free kick just outside the area that gave the visitors the opportunity to take the lead, which was duly taken by Daniel Munoz, who found the net from a deflected ball.

While the home side took a more attacking approach in the second half, with Luke Molyneux in particular looking threatening, they could not find the quality finish they were looking for, and their fates were sealed after Justin Devenny scored in the 55th minute.

Doncaster can leave the competition with their heads held high, knowing that they gave Palace a fight, and concentrate their efforts on gaining promotion to League One at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Palace will face Millwall in the fifth round, which takes place on March 1.

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Doncaster boss Grant McCann said: "I am proud of the players. They are in a good run of form, we knew it would be a tough game for us.

"[In the] first half we struggled to get near the ball a bit. Second half we changed a bit and started very well, we were on the front foot. I am proud of the players and the whole city really, the fans were great tonight."

On the future of the club, he said: "This gave a flavour of what this club is amount. We ultimately feel this club is a Championship club and it is our job to move us through the leagues."

On the performance by Doncaster tonight, Crystal Palace’s Will Hughes told BBC Sport: "We knew it was going to be a tough game. If you look at the results over the weekend, although there weren’t many shocks as such, all the games were tight involving Premier League teams and teams lower than them, so we knew it was going to be a battle.

Asked if he was pleased to be back after a period of injury, he said: "We’ve got such a good group here, aa great squad. Good to see a couple of faces back tonight, Matheus [Franca] and Adam [Wharton] who have been out for quite a while, so it was a good night all round."

In terms of his team’s chances in the rest of the competition, he said: "With the squad and how seriously we take it, I think we’ve always got a chance and the gaffer’s told us that many times. We’ve taken all the cup competitions seriously with the team selections and how we approach the games, so I think that’s shown this season, and it’s another chance to go far."

Finally on the club’s season in the Premier League, he said: "We had such a poor start in the league, it was really disappointing bur we bounced back really well, showed a lot of character and we’re in a good position at the moment, results-wise and performances, so we’ve just got to keep that up and the old cliché again of seeing where it takes us."

12th place Palace may be having a fairly unremarkable season in the Premier League, but they’ll be very pleased to ease through to the fifth round of the FA Cup. In the Premier League, they’ll next be in action at the weekend, against Everton.

Esse's taken a donk to the head as he's leaped up and collided with an elbow. There's no foul but as with any head injury, he does need some attention.

Molyneux has been pretty much the sole source of any threat by the home side, tonight. He's made Turner work for his money again, making up for his wasted free-kick.

Esse gives away a free kick on the edge of the area after a late tackle. The kick is taken but nothing is made of it and it soars out of play.

Justin Devenny makes up for his horrible miss and scores his first goal for Palace after he receives a wide ball in from Hughes I front of the goal, and chips it over the keeper.

In the last few minutes we’ve seen a horrible miss by Devenny, a denial for Mateta, and a barrage of shot by Molyneux. This could be an interesting second half.
