Chelsea celebrated the start of Liam Rosenior's reign with a 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup, but former Blues stars Joe Cole and Karen Carney told TNT Sports that the "emotionally intelligent" new manager must kick on and bring silverware to Stamford Bridge as quickly as possible. Liam Rosenior must make Chelsea contenders to win domestic trophies again, according to TNT Sports’ Joe Cole and Karen Carney after The Blues’ Emirates FA Cup victory.

Rosenior began his stint as Chelsea manager in ideal style as his side downed Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the third round of the FA Cup, though tougher tests are to come immediately in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup, the first of nine matches in the next month.

Jorrel Hato and Tosin Adarabioyo scored either side of half-time and though there were five brief minutes of jeopardy when Miles Leaburn pulled a goal back for Charlton from a set-piece, Marc Guiu soon hit Chelsea’s third to cap off an impressive display by the striker, and The Blues scored twice in stoppage time to complete the rout.

Though Chelsea have won the FIFA Club World Cup twice and the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League and Super Cup in the last seven seasons, they have not won a domestic trophy since their 2017/18 FA Cup triumph.

And according to TNT Sports pundits and former Chelsea stars Cole and Carney, that drought is something Rosenior must look to change as soon as possible.

"The thing I took away every time I heard him speak is winning," said Carney, who spent three seasons with The Blues and won the Women’s FA Cup. "I think it was something that was heard all the time when we were at Chelsea, winning.

"We did not hear ‘project’, we heard about winning. And I do not want to put pressure on Liam but I mentioned earlier, not won a domestic trophy since 2018. They did win trophies last season and trophies should make you want to win more and more and more.

"Everything about him - his positive energy, I feel like he sees this as a glass half full, even a young player he sees it as an opportunity, he does not see it as a threat."

Rosenior namechecked 11 players in his three-minute interview with TNT Sports, and said he was "excited for the future" working with an "outstanding" squad while the new boss particularly praised Chelsea’s intensity against a determined Charlton side.

And Cole, who won seven trophies in a Chelsea career which spanned 282 games, highlighted that positivity and ability to connect with players as a trait that could help Rosenior turn The Blues back into a winning machine.

"I think Liam is naturally a very positive guy," Cole said. "The proof might be in the pudding but I think he is very emotionally intelligent, the players he namechecked there.

"I thought Marc Guiu did well but he is obviously done something in that pitch, as a centre-forward playing against a low block you did not hear his name a lot in the first half but he was making runs."
