STEWART FIRES SAINTS INTO FA CUP QUARTER-FINAL

Substitute Ross Stewart sent Southampton through into the FA Cup quarter-finals courtesy of an injury-time penalty, beating Fulham 1-0.

The Championship visitors squandered several opportunities throughout the match, only for
Finn Azaz to earn a late penalty which Stewart dispatched.

Marco Silva made nine changes to his Fulham side, who almost had an unlikely lead after Saints goalkeeper Daniel Peretz kicked the ball against his own player and the deflection fell to Rodrigo Muniz, who netted.

However, the referee had already blown his whistle for an infringement and the goal was chalked off.

Despite seeing less of the ball, Saints were quick on the counter-attack. Leo Scienza could only steer his one-on-one effort wide, as the first half ended goalless.

Southampton played a patient game and stung again on the break on 58 minutes, but Tom Fellows was denied by home goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte.

Lecomte was forced into action again with 20 minutes remaining, this time tipping an excellent Azaz effort onto the crossbar.

Fulham’s best chance of the game came three minutes from time when Ryan Sessegnon was only denied by the face of the visiting goalkeeper.

However, the key moment came in injury time when Azaz was brought down inside the box by Joachim Andersen and Stewart rifled home the resulting penalty.

It is the first time Southampton have reached the FA Cup quarter-finals since 2022 and extends their unbeaten streak to 10 matches across all competitions.

STEWART: ‘SPECIAL MOMENT FOR ME,’

Match-winner Ross Stewart said that scoring the winning penalty during his side’s 1-0 victory against Fulham was a ‘special moment’ for the striker.

The Scottish striker has seen his career hit by injuries, including one that happened previously at Craven Cottage.

"It's an amazing feeling," said Stewart. "I love those moments. As a striker, I wanted the penalty. I practised them quite a lot, so I knew when I got it what I was looking to do.

"It was just good to hit the net. It's a moment I’ve missed. I've had a really tough time with injury, I love playing and helping the team.

"It's a special moment for me."

SAINTS 'DESERVED' WIN

TNT pundit Chris Coleman believes that Southampton deserved their 1-0 victory against Fulham and had the better chances.

He said: "They stayed strong and they stayed together.

"Although Fulham had a lot more possession, and had half chances. The clear-cut chances came to Southampton.

"They stayed in the game, they played on the counter-attack. When they did counter-attack, they had something to say.

"Fulham were never comfortable in the game, and the longer it went on, one goal was going to win it, and it went to Southampton.

"You have to say they deserved that."
