Macclesfield FC 2-1 Crystal Palace LIVE - Emirates FA Cup result as sixth-tier underdogs knock out reigning champions in historic upset

A spectacularly glum Oliver Glasner told TNT Sports that Crystal Palace U21s would've done better against Macclesfield than the starting XI he selected:

"We were not able to create chance with no player who can win a one against one, no player who’s quick enough to run pass somebody, no physical strength in our attack, we didn’t create anything.

"With no presence in the box, many balls inside but no players who are really scoring goals, having this feeling of where to go. Conceding a wide free-kick again, missing the header, a weakness. 

"I tried to make three changes, play more attacking football and the second goal is slapstick. Then we tried everything but I have no explanation. I think when you play with our under-21st team they do better than we did today.

The victorious manager caught up with TNT Sports:

"Sitting there last night I was thinking ‘What if, what if’, but you never really think you’re going to do it.

"After the first half though I had real belief, I thought we were outstanding, probably still a bit shocked but credit to the players, I thought they were outstanding."

"Once you get over that white line, players at our level, the occasion might get to them. I don’t think it did, I think they took it on the shoulders and carried it out.

"We’ve done our homework, we know they have conceded off set pieces this season. When we got the free-kick I turned round and said ‘Dawson’s scoring here’ and when he popped up… he knows where the back of the net is. He’s not the biggest but his timing’s unbelievable.

"They never [were on top], it wasn’t a snatch-and-grab, we had plenty of chances as well. The lads saw it out brilliantly and proud of them, so proud of them."

Regardless of the result today, it would've been a poignant day for Macclesfield given it came so quickly after 21-year-old forward Ethan McLeod passed away in a car crash after The Silkmen's game against Bedford Town.

His parents are in the changing room now greeting the players, and captain Dawson dedicated the victory to Macclesfield's former star.

"I don't know [how to feel]. What a shift from the boys, honestly. They moved the ball really quick, but the gaffer's team talk was exactly how we performed. We sat in a low block and I think we created more chances than they did. We more than held our own.

"With the shape of my head, and didn't know where [the ball] was going to come off. It's my best foot, my head! It was a great ball from Duffs as well. What a ball. This club is unbelievable. It's a really proud moment. We're gonna win it now! We might as well! If we play like we did today, who knows?

"That was for him [Ethan McLeod]. Big team performance, we dug in really well, and that was for Ethan."

Macclesfield become the first non-league team to knock out the FA Cup holders since 1908. They are the first non-league team to score twice in an FA Cup match against a Premier League side since Kettering Town vs Fulham in January 2009 and first against the holders since Runcorn v Preston in 1939.

Edmondson does just that after a Chris Richards long throw doesn't find it's mark, though he can only delay the Palace pressure for about 30 seconds before the onslaught resumes.

And Macclesfield are facing a reinvigorated opponent. If at all possible, they need to hold the ball up in the Palace half even for a minute.

Palace are back! Pino bends a fantastic free-kick into the top corner from less than 25 yards out and Palace have a lifeline!

To get the ball up and down over the wall in that distance was remarkable.

Unlike Steve McManaman, I've held off committing to the upset being on the cards for fear of jinxing it. But with less than five minutes left, Macclesfield look like they've got it in the bag now.

Palace look like they could play all day and not score, underlined when they fire two balls across the face of goal yet can't turn either in.
