TWO-GOAL MARMOUSH STARS AS MANCHESTER CITY SURGE INTO FA CUP QUARTER-FINALS

Manchester City produced a dominant performance as they overcame a tricky start to eventually defeat Newcastle United 3-1 at St. James' Park in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Pep Guardiola made 10 changes to his starting line-up from the 2-2 midweek draw with Nottingham Forest, and after 18 minutes, his second-string XI found themselves a goal behind, thanks to Harvey Barnes' superb effort.

But, as the half wore on, City gradually found their cohesion and equalised six minutes before half-time. A double-marked Jeremy Doku did well to make space for a cross, and his firmly-struck delivery made it all the way to the back post, where it hit a static Savinho and rolled over the goal-line.

It was an unusual, maybe even cheeky, goal from the Brazilian, but regardless of how it arrived, it proved to be the catalyst for a dominant second-half display, as Omar Marmoush took centre stage.

The Egypt striker gave City the perfect start to the second half as he smashed home a close-range effort just two minutes after the break.

Then, on 65 minutes, Marmoush produced the moment of the match, as he took possession just outside the penalty area, shifted the ball onto his right foot, and unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top corner of Aaron Ramsdale's net to put City 3-1 ahead.

The goal was one worthy of settling any cup tie, and it effectively ended Newcastle's chances of getting back into the game. The home side's heads visibly dropped, and City were able to keep them largely at arm's length for the remainder of the game, and probably should have added to their lead.

But, despite chances created by Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo, the scoreline remained 3-1 as City cruised to the final whistle.

Their victory means City will go into the hat for the FA Cup quarter-final draw, where they'll join Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, with four more ties still to be played on Sunday and Monday - live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

And, after claiming a resounding win after rotating his squad, few, if any, sides will relish a quarter-final date with Guardiola's men.

MARMOUSH: 'WE WANT TO MAKE THE FANS HAPPY'

Two-goal hero Omar Marmoush chatted with TNT Sports' Olivia Buzaglo after helping fire Manchester City into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and said that he's delighted to give the fans what they want by winning the big games that matter.

"Amazing performance," he said.

"We didn't start so well. We conceded early, but we showed our mentality and our passion on the pitch, and then we're very happy to go to the next round."

On the topic of his stunning second goal, Marmoush paid tribute to Matheus Nunes' role in the move to create the opportunity for him.

"I saw Matheus' breakthrough. He played the pass to me. I took a touch, and then it was open," he explained.

"I took a shot and (was) very happy it went in, and very happy that we reached the next round."

His two goals tonight were his third and fourth goals against Newcastle this season, and he modestly said he wasn't sure why he's had such success against Newcastle in particular.

"I don't know what the secret is, but I'm just happy to have the team again, and we look forward to the next game."

Finally, Marmoush paid tribute to the travelling City fans, who he labelled "amazing" after their vocal support at St. James' Park.

"The feeling they give us on the pitch, and the support they give us is incredible," he said.

"We're so thankful for them, and we just want to make them happy, always."
