West Ham United 2-2 Leeds United result – Pascal Struijk nets winning penalty to send visitors into first FA Cup semi-final in 39 years

Leeds United booked their place in the FA Cup last four for the first time in 39 years, following a penalty shootout win against West Ham United.

That was only after the Hammers scored twice in injury time in a dramatic finish and the game ended 2-2.

Daniel Farke was rewarded for naming a strong team when a moment of brilliance from Japanese midfielder Ao Tanaka rifled his side off the crossbar and into a 26th minute lead.

Nuno Espirito Santo made a double change at the break and his side came into the match.

However, they failed to find an equaliser and Taty Castellanos came closest with his header hitting the post.

Momentum turned again in the 72nd minute when Max Kilman fouled Brenden Aaronson inside the box and after VAR review a penalty was awarded, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin converting.

Leeds looked to be cruising into the semi-final with a two-goal lead until the hosts received a morale boost by 11 minutes of injury time.

In the third of those minutes Hammers’ skipper Jarrod Bowen hit the post and Mateus Fernandes netted to set-up a grandstand finish.

The equaliser came in 90+7 when Adama Traore’s cross was met by the diving boot of Axel Disasi to send the game into extra-time.

Both Castellanos and forward Pablo saw extra-time goal chalked out for West Ham as the game went to penalties.

The Hammers had to bring on 20-year-old debutant Finley Herrick for the shootout and he saved his first penalty.

However, it was Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perri who was the hero saving efforts from Bowen and Pablo to secure the win.

Leeds have been rewarded for their penalty shootout success with a tie against Chelsea at Wembley.

Leeds will face Chelsea in the semi-final at Wembley, while Manchester City face Southampton. Ties on April 25 and 26.

Joe Cole told TNT Sports: [Chelsea v Leeds] is a spicy tie. It's very historic. It's got to be the longest distance for a rivalry. It goes back to what probably was the dirtiest game in FA Cup history, the 1970 Cup final. The Leeds fans who are leaving this stadium will be buzzing think they're coming back to London to face their old rivals."

Pascal Struijk scored the winning penalty to send Leeds into the FA Cup semi-final.

He told TNT Sports: "I can't say I practice [penalties] too much but I had experience last season. We showed great composure at 2-2 to win on penalties. We need to work on what happened after 2-0, but we've got time to prepare for Wembley."

Leeds United goalkeeper Lucas Perri praised the ‘magic of the cup’ after his side’s pulsating win on penalties against West Ham.

"It's the magic of the cup. It was an incredible, crazy game. Now, we must keep going. We need to be prepared for everything. We knew after the first goal, they would come and attack us and try to force extra time. Thank God then, their goals [in extra time] were offside, and so I'm so happy we won the match. Our focus now is on achieving the points to stay in the league, but when the time comes we will be looking forward to the semi-final and give everything to win that game."

Neither side deserved to be dumped out of the FA Cup after that enthralling clash. However, it’s Leeds who triumph in the penalty shootout.

West Ham skipper Bowen was one of those who had their penalties saved for the hosts.

Joe Cole told TNT Sports: "They stuck at it, Leeds. They dug in. For large parts of that game, West Ham were on top but Leeds showed real grit and determination. Perri showed his quality not just in the shootout, but also in the game where he made some really important save. You can see why he's in the Brazil squad."

Ally McCoist told TNT Sports: "What a game, what a cup tie. The drama that was unfolding in front of our eyes was absolutely remarkable. Leeds go to Wembley. It was just a thrill to be here."

Joe Cole told TNT Sports: "He would have been sat there 15 minutes ago not expecting this. But his body language since he came on in the couple of moments he's touched the ball, he took his time and calmed everyone down. He walked out and showed that he belongs here. He looks like a kid who is ready. This could be another one of those great FA Cup stories, but there's work to do."

The West Ham talisman is in the middle of the players giving a stirring speech. He has inspired this fightback and is motivating the Hammers further.

Nothing can separate the sides after extra-time and this will be decided by penalties.

The West Ham winger has picked up a knock and replaced by Mayers.

Leeds cause more problems for themselves as Bijol fails to get enough power on his back-pass and Lucas Perri has to snatch the ball from Pablo.
