Senegal 3-1 Sudan result - Pape Gueye brace and Ibrahim Mbaye seal comeback win to send Senegal into quarter-finals

Pape Gueye scored a brace as Senegal cruised to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations as they came from behind to beat Sudan 3-1.

The Lions of Teranga entered the match as heavy favourites, but were slow out of the blocks and Sudan immediately punished them.

Aamir Abdallah cut inside from the right flank and curled a shot over Edouard Mendy and into the top corner six minutes in to give Sudan a shock lead.

However, Senegal regained control of the ball and the match as they hunted an equaliser.

They finally found what they were looking for as Sadio Mane pounced on a Sudanese error and squared the ball to Pape Gueye, who swept the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Ismaila Sarr looked dangerous for Senegal, and he thought he had won a penalty and scored a goal as the first half drew to a close, but he was twice denied by the flag.

The lengthy VAR checks led to seven minutes of added time, which Senegal took advantage of as Pape Gueye smashed home from Nicolas Jackson's pull-back.

Sudan nearly started the second half just like the first, as Sheddy Barglan found space inside the box, but he could only put his finish straight at Mendy.

From then on, Senegal seized control and Ibrahim Mbaye doubled their advantage with 15 minutes left after a fantastic through ball from Mane.

They saw out the remainder of the match with ease, booking their place in the quarters where they will face either Tunisia or Mali, who play each other later on Saturday.

Niakhate is back on the field which will be a huge relief for Senegal, who are knocking the ball around with ease.

And that will be that. Senegal are in the quarter finals despite the early scare, and Sudan are heading home after a promising campaign.

Sudan are trying to find a consolation goal late on, but are just lacking that final quality in the box.

Mbaye has plenty of energy and chases a ball over the top but can't get it under control.

Mendy is back on his feet but Niakhate is still down. Sounds like it might be an achilles injury, which could rule him out of the tournament if it is serious.

He is able to limp off with help and doesn't need the stretcher.

Senegal clear the corner as seven minutes are added on.

Sloppy from Sudan as they give away an unnecessary corner. Pathe Ciss is coming on for Pape Gueye who will not get a hat-trick today.

Diouf's ball drifts over everyone and Sudan counter. Al-Gozoli Nooh is in on goal, but Niakhate pokes it away.

However, he has done himself and the onrushing Mendy some damage in the process.

Sudan have made a triple change, including bringing off goalscorer Abdallah.

It has been a positive tournament for them but this is just one step too far. Senegal haven't been at their fluent best but the gap in quality is too much.

It was Mane who found that inch-perfect pass to send Mbaye on his way. He still has it.

Mbaye has a great chance to get his second within five minutes after coming on, but he heads Diouf's cross over from point-blank range.

He should have scored.

Ibrahim Mbaye has just come on and the teenager has surely secured his country's place in the quarters!

Senegal counter with pace and Mbaye is played through on the right hand side.

He doesn't quite take it cleanly and it looks like the chance has gone until he rifles it into the net at the near post!

Barglan is good to continue, but picks up a yellow within seconds after catching Diouf with a loose boot.

If Senegal can see this out, they will face either Mali or Tunisia in the quarters.

Diatta cuts inside and puts it over from the edge of the box. Sudan will make a change now.

Winger Mohamed Abdelrahman is replaced by Slaheldin Adil, so it looks like two up top now.

Barglan is now down clutching his head.

Ammar Taifour needs some more strapping on a head cut sustained in the first half so Sudan are temporarily down to 10 men.

Diatta bursts into the box with a jolt of pace, but his cross is overhit and goes out for a goal-kick.

Dia looks to latch onto a Mane ball, but pushes Mohamed Saeed Ahmed in his efforts to get there.

Senegal are growing into the game more, and Sudan look bereft of ideas.

Senegal make the first changes of the night, as West Ham left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf comes on for Jakobs. Boulaye Dia also replaces Jackson, so both booked players are off the pitch.

Another corner for Senegal, but pushing in the box disrupts their momentum.

Nicolas Jackson is a bit over-eager to get the ball back and pulls a Sudanese player down, earning a yellow card.

Sudan have started on the front foot but need to make the most of this dominance. Sheddy Barglan wins a corner.

Abdallah goes shot, before Eisa puts it into the box, but Khamis's shot is deflected behind for another corner.
