It has finally been officially announced: Liverpool have signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a record-breaking transfer that will see the Germany international play in the Premier League next season. Wirtz became one of Europe's most coveted talents after starring in Leverkusen's historic unbeaten Bundesliga campaign in 2023/24, in which they clinched their maiden league title.

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record fee.

It is reported that the 22-year-old could cost Liverpool up to £116m, which would break the British transfer record of £107m that Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

Germany international Wirtz has put pen to paper on a long-term deal at Anfield and is Liverpool's second major summer signing after former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong.

"I feel very happy and very proud," said Wirtz.

"Finally it’s done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it’s done and I am really happy.

"I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.

"I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game."

A highly touted talent for several seasons, Wirtz was named Bundesliga's Player of the Season in 2023/24 as Xabi Alonso's side clinched the title whilst going unbeaten.

He finished that campaign with 18 goals and 20 assists, and ended up with 16 goals and 15 assists last term.

However, another Bundesliga title would not materialise after Alonso's side finished second in the table and 13 points adrift of Bayern Munich.

On his goals at Liverpool, Wirtz added: "I would like to win everything every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work.

"In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League, so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.

"This was also a big point for me: that I will improve my own personal level and physical levels because I think everyone knows that in Liverpool the players are machines – really strong and really physical.

"But I see this also as an opportunity for me to get better in this point. I just thought this was the right place for me."

Wirtz's move has bolstered an already strong midfield as Liverpool look to retain their league title next season.

Asked about Liverpool's title win, Wirtz said: "I was just happy for the players here to live it, the moment, and also for the people here.

"I think it was well-deserved because they played an unbelievable season. It was just crazy to see how many people came and how the atmosphere was. It was really good to see.

"I'm not coming [to] have fun here, I want also to achieve something and give the fans what they deserve.

"Of course I want to keep going at this performance. So yeah, that sure gives me motivation to achieve more."

Liverpool and Leverkusen faced off in UEFA Champions League action in November at Anfield, with The Reds running out 4-0 winners.
