Ajax’s Jordan Henderson was involved in a tense exchange with a reporter as he questioned "lies" and "painful untruths" over his mooted move to Monaco.
The midfielder only arrived at Ajax a year ago from Saudi Arabia but was strongly linked with a transfer to Ligue 1 this window.
It was reported that Henderson, who has been Ajax's captain for most of the season but didn’t wear the armband against Galatasaray on Thursday, had asked to leave.
Henderson denied that suggestion and hit out at speculation surrounding his future following Ajax’s 2-1 victory over Feyenoord on Sunday.
Asked why he wanted to move to Monaco, Henderson replied: "Based on what?"
It was then put to him that "the coach has just told us you wanted to go to Monaco because you had a big offer", to which Henderson said: "The coach has told you I wanted to go to Monaco? Because I had a big offer? That's not true."
Asked if Ajax had told him they wanted to sell him, Henderson replied: "Well they were negotiating so I'd imagine they did yeah.
"But again, it's not about the details, I'm not giving you details. I know the truth, I know what happened, I'm not here to give you details. I'm just here to tell you from my side."
Henderson then said "99 per cent" of what had been reported was "untrue" and that nobody had convinced him to stay.
In an interview with ESPN, he revealed more about what had happened and his unhappiness at reporting over his future.
"Everyone knows the club's financial situation. Money has to be created and that can be done by letting big earners leave," Henderson said of the situation.
"I am one of the big earners. It's often about my salary in the media. The situation was that we had to decide whether it was worth pivoting or keeping my salary in this case.
"Those were difficult conversations. I said what I thought, but we jointly came to the conclusion that I should stay. I am happy with that. I will give everything for the club and the team.
"Of course I am happy to stay. My plan was to stay here at least until the end of the season and then re-evaluate. A lot of things were taken out of context in the press. That was disrespectful, they were lies.
"Untruths were told about me as a person. I tried to focus, but it feels painful. People may criticise me because of my game, but when it gets personal ... I am a human being with family, parents, a wife and children. If they read things in the press that are not true, that is going too far. I don't know what their sources are, but it is not true."
He added: "I think 99% of people, if they knew the inside information, wouldn't have played the game [on Thursday].
"But yet, people in this room have questioned my professionalism and me as a person - I think it's bang out of order. I've got a family, wife, kids, mum, dad, who read nonsense in the media from you guys."
