Alexia Putellas has announced that she will leave Barcelona at the end of the season after 14 trophy-laden years at the Catalan club.

The 32-year-old confirmed on Tuesday that Wednesday’s Liga F game against Real Sociedad will be her last with Barcelona, opting against the option of an additional year in her contract.

The club captain has ended on a high, with Barcelona claiming their fourth UEFA Champions League title last weekend following a 4-0 thumping of Lyon, while winning Liga F for a seventh successive time and the Copa de la Reina for the sixth time in seven years.

"I said I wanted the final moment to come when I was at my best, giving everything and with 100 percent energy," Putellas said on Instagram.

"That's it, now it's time. It has been a perfect story...

"[At six years old] I only saw men playing in the stadium and it would never have occurred to me that one day, in that very same place, more than 90,000 cules [Barcelona fans] would be shouting my name.

Putellas has won 38 trophies during her time at Barcelona, including 10 league titles, while all four of the club’s Champions League triumphs have come during her 14-year stay, with the first in 2021.

The Spaniard, who came through Barcelona’s academy before loan spells with Espanyol and Levante, has made 512 appearances for the club, scoring 234 goals in that time.

Her record makes her the all-time leading scorer of Barcelona’s women’s team, while only Lionel Messi has scored more across the men’s and women’s sides.

Putellas won the Ballon d’Or Feminin on successive occasions in 2021 and 2022, becoming the first Spanish and Barcelona winner of the award.

Barcelona have said in a statement: ”The story of Alexia Putellas is one of talent, resilience and love for a player who has become much more than a footballer.

”A Barca Women icon who arrived at the age of 18 in 2012 from Levante, and who has grown with the team since then.

”Now, 14 years later, the midfielder from nearby Mollet del Valles is set to leave Barca on a high after writing herself into the history books of her childhood club.

”As the seasons have passed, she has gained icon status, the guiding light for a team who have gradually become a world force.”

After tearing her ACL in 2022, she returned to her best, scoring 20 goals this season, including seven times in the Champions League, while she is in contention for a third Ballon d’Or.

Putellas won the World Cup with Spain in 2023 and was part of the squad that finished runners-up to England at Euro 2025.

She could be one of several Barcelona departures this summer, with Mapi Leon, Ona Batlle and Marta Torrejon expected to leave at the end of their deals, according to reports.

Meanwhile, Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo are also out of contract at the end of this campaign.

London City among favourites to sign Putellas - reports

It remains to be seen where Putellas will be playing her football next season, but Women's Super League side London City Lionesses have been strongly linked with the Spaniard.

The 32-year-old has also reportedly attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain, as well as clubs from the United States and Mexico.

But sources close to London City have reportedly told BBC Sport there is confidence they can secure the services of Putellas this summer.

The club, who finished sixth in their debut campaign in the WSL, have been in discussions with the two-time Ballon d'Or winner for several months, according to the report.

The backing of billionaire owner, investor Michele Kang, and the January appointment of Spaniard Eder Maestre as head coach strengthen the club's position.

Meanwhile, former Barcelona player Jana Fernández is already at the club, and Leon is also expected to be joining, as per multiple reports.
