Liverpool appear to have won the race to sign sought-after centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. Chelsea had also made a bid to sign the 20-year-old but he is reportedly set to make the switch to Anfield in the summer. Liverpool have reached a pre-agreement to sign Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet in the summer, according to multiple reports.
The deal will reportedly be worth ÂŁ55 million with ÂŁ5m in add-ons, and personal terms will "not be an issue".
Jacquet, 20, has also been linked with Chelsea after impressing in Ligue 1 this season.
Liverpool had prioritised the signing of a centre-back after missing out on Marc Guehi last summer, with the England international since joining Manchester City from Crystal Palace.
The Athletic claim the reigning Premier League champions see Jacquet as "a more valuable long-term acquisition" than Guehi.
The France Under-21 international is "considered a big piece" of the club's rebuild for the next generation, along with Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Alexander Isak.
Jacquet has been a key player for Rennes this season, making 18 Ligue 1 appearances and helping his side to sixth in the table.
He came through the club's youth ranks and has emerged as one of the most highly-rated defenders in France.
Arsenal were reportedly interested in Jacquet last summer before choosing to sign Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia.
But Liverpool have moved to strengthen in an area where they have lacked depth this season, with Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni injured. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been the go-to options in defence but the latter is out of contract in the summer.
Jacquet revealed in an interview last year that his idols are Van Dijk and Konate, as well as Paul Pogba.
"I’m calm on the ball, maybe I can look a bit nonchalant - but I’m focused," he said. "What defines me is playing out well, breaking lines with the right pass."
Asked about his progress with Rennes, he said: "The coach asks me to communicate more, to lead, to add a bit more aggression. I’m working on finding the right balance."
