Real Madrid 2-0 Arsenal: Caicedo and Athenea strikes see Los Blancos claim first-leg advantage in quarter-final

Real Madrid beat Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of the pair’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium on Tuesday.

The first half saw the hosts take the lead through Linda Caicedo, with the Colombian latching onto a Leah Williamson mistake before firing into the bottom corner. 

Arsenal pushed for an equaliser in the second period, only to be sucker-punched by substitute Athenea del Castillo’s strike mid-way through the half. Manuela Zinsberger managed to get a strong hand to the Spain international's shot, but could only parry it into the bottom corner. 

It turned out to be a dismal evening for the Gunners, who, despite having the lion's share of the possession and a spate of corners, registered one shot on target in the entire game, and none at all in the second half. 

They will hope to make amends when they welcome Real Madrid to the Emirates for the reverse fixture on Wednesday, March 26, with the game live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

It's all over. Real Madrid claimed a goal in either half through Linda Caicedo and Athenea del Castillo to earn themselves a two-goal advantage ahead of the reverse fixture at the Emirates next Wednesday.

It was a horrible night for Arsenal, who were toothless and struggled to play their football in the dismal conditions. Indeed, they managed just one shot on target the entire game.

Arsenal have another ball whipped into the box, but it fails to clear the first man. The Gunners just can't make the chances count tonight.

Meanwhile, Misa is booked for dissent after arguining against the decision to award the corner.

Carmona is in the book for her challenge on Fox. Arsenal's subsequent free-kick loops into the box, and amid the scramble Arsenal are calling for a hand-ball.

Can Arsenal half the deficit?

Another Arsenal corner but this time it misses everyone, before arriving at the feet of Walti on the edge of the box. Her cross is dangerous but well cleared.

However, McCabe's delivery is once again cleared out by the Madrid defenders. I feel I have written a variation of this post a million times.

Feller beat McCabe on the flank before whipping a cross into the box, the is dealt with by Williamson.

Caldentey's cross is directed towards Russo but Real Madrid once again stop it short of reaching the Arsenal striker.

Real Madrid make a pair of subs. Bruun is off for Athenea, while Feller replaces Caicedo.

Just as swiftly as their aformentioned penalty shout is waved away, Arsenal win themselves a corner. Kelly's ball in, however, is once again easily cleared.

Caldentey then sees her deflected cross punched away from the danger area. Arsenal are pushing!

Russo feeds Kelly with the outside of her boot, and the Arsenal forward picks up the ball in the box before collapsing to her knees. It was waved away by the referee, but VAR are taking a look, but don't think it will be given.

Leupolz limps off and is replaced by 16-year-old Derado. It's her Champions League debut. Meanwhile, Arsenal have a corner which they again see cleared by Real.

McCabe gets up the flank and wins Arsenal a corner. She's been more involved in the game this half.
