Bayern Munich v Arsenal recap - Germans complete incredible turnaround to beat defending champions 3-2 in UEFA Women's Champions League

Bayern Munich pulled off an unbelievable comeback against the defending UEFA Women’s Champions League winners Arsenal, fighting back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at the Allianz Arena.

Arsenal piled on the pressure from the first whistle, pressing Bayern when they tried to build up play from the back.

Renee Slegers’ side got their reward for a positive start, taking the lead after just six minutes. The ball was worked to Beth Mead who fired an effort straight at Bayern goalkeeper Maria Grohs, but the 24-year-old could only palm the ball towards Emily Fox who headed home to open the scoring.

The visitors continued to pour forward, forcing Bayern into giving the ball away at the back on multiple occasions without making them pay.

That was until Mariona Caldentey doubled The Gunners’ lead after 26 minutes. Stine Pedersen played a stray pass straight into the path of Beth Mead who laid it off for Stina Blackstenius. She then found Caldentey who did brilliantly to shift the ball onto her right foot before curling a superb effort past Grohs.

Bayern, who could hardly play worse than they did in the first half, started the second period better, moving the ball quicker and with more attacking intent.

Jose Barcala made a double switch on the hour mark, introducing Alara Sehitler and Arianna Caruso and it was a decision that paid off, with Sehitler pulling one back for the hosts just five minutes later. Bayern broke forward with pace down the left-hand side with Kiara Buhl, who fired a ball across into the centre for Sehitler who was on hand to take a good first touch before dinking her effort past Daphne van Domselaar.

Arsenal had a huge chance to wrap up the victory with just over 10 minutes to go when Russo did brilliantly down the left-hand side to find space before squeezing a cross across the face of goal looking for Frida Maanum who could not manage to get on the end of it.

It was a chance that The Gunners lived to rue, as the German side equalised just a couple of minutes later, with substitute Pernille Harder striking a fine effort past Van Domselaar to level the game.

Bayern completed an unbelievable comeback in the 86th minute, with Ruhl whipping in a fantastic cross from the left-hand side into the path of Glodis Viggosdottir who was on hand to turn her effort home.

An outstanding comeback from Bayern Munich and an almighty capitulation from Arsenal. Bayern have fought back from 0-2 down to win 3-2 at the Allianz Arena against the defending champions.

That was a massive chance to wrap up the victory for Arsenal. Alessia Russo does brilliantly down the left-hand side, squeezing a cross across for Maanum who can't get on the end of it.

Taylor Hinds and Kyra Cooney-Cross are on for Katie McCabe and Victoria Pelova.

Arsenal just aren't keeping the ball now, it's all Bayern and the visitors look all over the place. Renee Slegers will be urging her team to get on the ball and play the game at their pace, because at the moment it's Bayern who are running this half.

The hosts are really pushing for an equaliser now, how the momentum has shifted! Tanikawa fires an effort on goal from distance which van Domselaar saves.

The 18-year-old has pulled one back for Bayern! The hosts broke brilliantly down the left-hand side, Klara Buhl played the ball across the face of goal for Alara who took a great first touch before nudging her effort past van Domselaar.
