OH Leuven 0-3 Arsenal - Gunners dominate Women's Champions League clash in Belgium with Olivia Smith and Beth Mead both on target

Arsenal cruised to victory at OH Leuven on Wednesday to finish the Women's Champions League group stage in fifth position.

The Gunners have had mixed results in the Champions League, losing to Lyon at home and Bayern Munich away, but they were impressive in securing their fourth victory from six games tonight and finish the group stage four points off top spot in fifth place, meaning they'll face a play-off in the new year.

OH Leuven will also be in the knockout stages in the twelfth and final qualifying spot.

Dominating possession from the first whistle, the Gunners had the game virtually won by the break and the lead could have been much bigger were it not for a strong performance from home goalkeeper Lowiese Seynhaeve.

Canadian flanker Olivia Smith scored a fine opener, exchanging passes with Mariona Caldentey on the wing and then racing into the box to shoot firmly towards the near corner and then following up to slam home after Seynhaeve’s save. Caldentey limping off in the closing stages is the only potential downside from the night for Arsenal.

The game was effectively over before the half-hour mark when Alessia Russo found Beth Mead in space on the right flank and she guided an unstoppable effort into the far corner, with Linde Veefkind’s own goal from substitute Caitlin Foord’s cross adding deserved gloss in the second half.

She curls an effort towards the far corner but it is just wide of the target.

They are linking well around the box but the final ball is just lacking.

But on this occasion she shoots wide of the far post.

She has had a fine game though, getting the assist for Mead's goal. She is replaced by Maanum.

She runs in along the right by-line, but her drilled cross is cleared.

And she attempts a curler towards the far post but Seynhaeve catches the ball above her head.

She is replaced by Fox. The Gunners will dearly hope the injury is not serious.

Neyrinck and Bosteels come on for Leuven.

She diked a cross into the box which Foord runs onto but can't nod into the net.

But she could not direct her header on target.

A fantastic through-ball from Cooney-Cross finds Foord and her cross is deflected into the Leuven goal by Veefkind.

Little, Smith and Catley come off. They are replaced by skipper Williamson, Foord and Blackstenius.

She goes in for a pretty rough foul on Smith. One which was born of frustration you feel.

But her shot from the edge of the area is saved by the Leuven stopper diving to her right.

She has two efforts attempting to get a shot in, but both of them are blocked.
