France 4-0 Ukraine result - Didier Deschamps' side romp to win to secure World Cup qualification

Didier Deschamps’ side beat Ukraine 4-0 in Paris thanks to a brace from Kylian Mbappe and goals from Michael Olise and Hugo Ekitike to secure their spot at the 2026 World Cup.

Mbappe had the first real chance of the evening after 17 minutes, rifling a low effort on goal from around 25 yards out which forced Anatoliy Trubin into a good save, with the Ukraine keeper tipping it behind for a corner.

France went close again just before half-time, again with an effort from distance. On this occasion, Bradley Barcola tried his luck from the left-hand side on his right foot, firing a brilliant curling effort that looked destined for the top corner but Trubin was yet again equal to it, diving across his goal to make a stunning save.

Ukraine, who struggled to lay a glove on France in the first half, thought they had won a penalty just five minutes into the second half when Yehor Nazaryna went down under a challenge from Dayot Upamecano. The referee initially decided against giving it, was then sent to the monitor but stuck with his original decision of no penalty.

Just five minutes later, the referee did point to the spot for a penalty. Only this one was in favour of Les Bleus. No VAR check was needed for this one, with Taras Mykhavko clearly stamping on Michael Olise’s foot in the penalty area. Mbappe stepped up to make it 1-0 with a cheeky Panenka.

France then burst into life in the final 15 minutes, scoring three goals in quick succession. Olise notched France’s second, receiving a pass from N'Golo Kante in the penalty area before taking a good first touch and firing home past Trubin.

Mbappe grabbed his second and France’s third of the night seven minutes from time, popping up at the back post to fire home into an empty net after Ekitike’s effort was smothered by the Ukraine goalkeeper.

Ekitike then scored the fourth and final goal of the night with what was the pick of the bunch. The Liverpool attacker picked the ball up deep in his own half on the left-hand side before driving through the heart of the pitch, evading several Ukrainian players and playing a nice one-two with Mbappe before blasting his effort past Trubin and into the back of the net.

France continue their unbeaten qualifying campaign, moving to 13 points at the summit of Group D. For Ukraine however, they remain in third, outside the qualifying spots for the FIFA World Cup and know they will need a good result in their next match against Iceland if they are to move back into those spots.

A superb goal.

Kylian Mbappe puts the icing on the cake with a third goal for France and he will struggle to score an easier one in his career. Ekitike's bundled effort bounced up in front of Mbappe with an open goal at his mercy and the Real Madrid man simply tapped it home.
