Republic of Ireland 2-0 Portugal result: Cristiano Ronaldo sent off after Troy Parrott's goals stun Portugal in World Cup qualifier

Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off as Portugal were made to wait to secure World Cup qualification on a dramatic night in Dublin.

Two first-half goals from Troy Parrott gave Republic of Ireland a 2-0 victory that kept their hopes alive going into Sunday’s decisive match against Hungary.

Parrott headed in from close range following a corner and doubled Ireland’s lead just before the break with a disguised shot.

Portugal dominated possession throughout but Ireland defended superbly and threatened on the counter-attack throughout.

Portugal’s growing frustration peaked when Ronaldo elbowed Dara O’Shea in the back and was given a straight red card following a VAR intervention.

Ronaldo will miss Sunday’s final match at home to Armenia, a game Portugal need to win to guarantee automatic qualification.

Ireland play Hungary in Budapest knowing that only a victory will lift them to second and into a play-off place. After this, their confidence will be sky-high.
