A spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final is up for grabs on Wednesday, July 15. Only one of England and Argentina will make the cut and both coaching set-ups will be furiously drawing up plans to make sure their nation will grasp the golden ticket.

On the surface, it looks like an encounter defined by individual stardom and gargantuan names - Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Lionel Messi will all be desperate to have their say.

But football is rarely ever that crude. The battle between Thomas Tuchel and Lionel Scaloni will surely be just as vital as the duels between the sport's biggest headline-makers.

While Tuchel's starting line-up is still firmly in flux owing to suspension and injury, Scaloni has had the luxury of naming the same XI for their last two knockout fixtures.

Golden Boot-chaser Messi has been paired with Atletico Madrid hotshot Julian Alvarez up front, with a metronomic midfield diamond of Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez, Rodrigo De Paul and Leandro Paredes providing bite and bravery behind.

At the back, aggressive duo Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero have been flanked by the experienced Nicolas Tagliafico and Nahuel Molina, all protecting Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez in goal.

Ahead of France's meeting with Spain in the last four, the reigning champions are the tournament's top scorers, netting 17 in their six matches.

And having conceded the same number as England - 6 - it is clear this should be a match decided on small margins and tactical tweaks.

But where will it be won and lost? Read on to learn the five key battles that will take centre stage in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Stopping Messi

It is a question that has befuddled the game's brightest brains for two decades: how do you stop Messi?

The 39-year-old icon encountered serious Swiss resistance in the quarter-finals, failing to score for the first time this summer.

But even the Inter Miami forward's scoresheet blank does not tell the whole story, as it was Messi's corner that found the head of Mac Allister for the match's opener.

Given a carte blanche out-of-possession, Messi's expert control of pace and timing means you can never truly be ready for his trademark burst of acceleration and intricate interplay.

However, Switzerland's stodgy low block with ultra-disciplined positioning to minimise defensive gaps worked a treat for much of the contest and could be a blueprint for Tuchel to follow.

Midfield mayhem

One thing stands out when you look at Argentina's average positioning against Switzerland and it is hardly a surprise given their lesser-spotted diamond midfield.

As seen in the graphic above - courtesy of Opta Analyst - the World Cup champions kept the centre of the pitch extremely congested, especially with No. 9 Alvarez dropping deep and No. 6 Martinez jumping out of defence.

De Paul pulled right to support the struggling Molina at full-back - more on him below - but there was a distinct lack of midfield width otherwise.

The crucial question for Thomas Tuchel will be whether England's trio of Bellingham, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson can avoid being overrun in the engine room.

In addition, playing through a maelstrom of blue and white shirts could be off the cards. Might Tuchel instruct his players to play more direct then, bypassing the central battleground by going around and over?

Gordon v Molina

Atletico's Molina did not cover himself in glory against the Swiss, his shaky performance typified by opposite number Dan Ndoye's superb second-half equaliser.

The 28-year-old lost possession nine times and won just one duel in the 85 minutes he was on the pitch, with Ndoye attempting five dribbles and firing two shots on target during his 86-minute stint.

Gordon, Tuchel's first-choice option at left-wing, meanwhile, attempted eight dribbles against Norway - double the number any of his team-mates managed - and won seven duels in a devastating 71-minute blast. And that is without mentioning the Barcelona summer signing's pinpoint assist for Bellingham's leveller.

Scaloni might be tempted to plump for understudy Gonzalo Montiel in place of Molina, but the River Plate right-back has not managed more than 45 minutes at this World Cup after suffering four separate injuries in the 2025/26 season.

Bellingham's battle

It seems a long time ago since Jude Bellingham's place in the England line-up was up for discussion.

The 23-year-old has put in performances befitting 'Roy of the Rovers' time and time again at this summer's tournament, firing home the equaliser and winner against Norway to rescue an out-of-sorts England.

Bellingham's third-man runs into the box have caused havoc for defences since his post-kissing winner against Croatia in the Three Lions' curtain-raiser.

But the Stourbridge-born talisman has not yet come up against a centre-back partnership as front-footed and aggressive as Martinez and Romero.

Both sense danger well ahead of time and are not afraid to smother advancing attackers at source, posing a delicate risk-reward conundrum for Bellingham and Kane. If they avoid a trademark cruncher, can they find space in behind the Premier League pairing?

Will Martinez frustrate Kane?

While England have never faced Emiliano Martinez in an international match, Kane has come up against the Aston Villa shot-stopper on seven separate occasions.

And while Kane leads Martinez on the record of results - four wins versus three - the former Tottenham Hotspur striker has never scored an open-play goal against Argentina's No. 1.

The Bayern Munich man has beaten Martinez from the penalty spot twice, however, his latest coming for Spurs in a 2-1 defeat in 2023.

The pair's last encounter - Bayern Munich's 1-0 loss at Villa Park in 2024 - saw Kane praise the two-time Yashin Trophy winner for inexplicably saving his would-be equaliser in the dying stages.
