2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot standings: Kylian Mbappe beats Lionel Messi to prize after Argentine draws blank in final

The Golden Boot race at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was hotly contested between a host of football's biggest stars aiming to write themselves into the history books alongside some of the sport's greatest legends.

Previous winners of the award include the likes of Just Fontaine, Eusebio, Gary Lineker and Ronaldo Nazario, as well as, more recently, Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane and James Rodriguez.
In this year's tournament in North America, the biggest names in the game are leading the way, with Mbappe, Kane, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham among the tournament's most-prolific performers.
Coming into the final between Spain and Argentina, Mbappe topped the Golden Boot standings with 10 goals, two in front of Messi.
Only Messi could pip Mbappe to the award, but he failed to get on the scoresheet after Argentina lost 1-0 after extra time thanks to Ferran Torres's strike.
The trophy is given to the tournament's top goalscorer, with assists used as a tie-breaker if players finish level on goals. Should this still not be enough to separate the leaders, the lowest number of minutes played is used as the final point of difference.
There were plenty of candidates in contention, with 48 teams competing at the biggest World Cup ever.

Messi, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, began with a hat-trick against Algeria and then netted a brace against Austria, breaking the record for the most goals scored in World Cup history along the way.
He came off the bench against Jordan in the final group game to score his sixth goal of the tournament, before adding a seventh - and the 20th World Cup goal of his career - against Cabo Verde in the last 32.
The 39-year-old helped save Argentina in their dramatic last-16 victory over Egypt, scoring the equaliser as the champions roared back from two goals down to win 3-2.
Messi's creative qualities came to the fore thereafter, with an assist for Alexis Mac Allister's opener in a 3-1 (AET) win over Switzerland in the quarter-finals before he set up both of Argentina's late goals that broke England's hearts in the last four.
Real Madrid striker Mbappe, who won the Golden Boot in 2022, went level with Messi on eight in the victory over Morocco in the quarter-finals.
His first goal in the bronze match against England moved him to the top of the Golden Boot race on nine and saw him join Messi at the top of the all-time World Cup scoring charts on 21.
A brilliant team goal saw Mbappe grab his second of the game, his 10th of this tournament and the outright all-time World Cup record of 22 goals.
Haaland, who scored the winner for Norway in their last-32 tie against Cote d'Ivoire, finished on seven goals, despite having sat out their final group game against France with his team already through.
His late brace against Brazil in the last 16 booked Norway's spot in the quarter-finals, but he cannot add to his tally following defeat to England in the quarter-finals.
Kane finished on six goals. He opened with a brace against Croatia and then his stunning display saved England in the last 32 against DR Congo. Trailing 1-0, a second-half double turned the game in England's favour and ensured Thomas Tuchel's side did not suffer a shock exit.
The England skipper made it six when firing home from the penalty spot in the 3-2 win over Mexico.
Bellingham went one better than his captain, as his goal against France in the bronze match saw him move onto seven to become the highest scoring England player at a single World Cup.
Dembele finished on six goals thanks to a goal in the bronze match, after doubling France's lead against Morocco, having also scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 group stage win over Norway, and once against Iraq.
Mikel Oyarzabal moved onto four goals thanks to his double in the win over Austria in the last 32, adding to his brace against Saudi Arabia in the group stage. The Real Sociedad striker scored his fifth in the semi-final against France.
Cristiano Ronaldo helped himself to three goals, having broken a record by scoring twice in the victory over Uzbekistan and got over his knockout stage hoodoo in the last-32 victory over Croatia, but his challenge ended with Portugal's loss to Spain.
