Following their heartbreaking late 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat to a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina, questions have been raised over England’s approach, and in particular the tactics of head coach Thomas Tuchel.

England took the lead in Atlanta through Anthony Gordon after 55 minutes of their semi-final clash and looked on course for victory to reach a first World Cup final since 1966.

However, with Argentina pushing for an equaliser, Tuchel’s side appeared to drop deeper and deeper into a defensive low block as the manager introduced more and more defenders with his substitutions.

By the time Argentina drew level in the 85th minute, The Three Lions had Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Marc Guehi, Dan Burn and Djed Spence manning a five-man backline, with the midfielders, including accustomed defender Nico O'Reilly, and even striker Harry Kane not playing that much further in front of them.

Only when Argentina took the lead in stoppage time did Tuchel bring on Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney, but it was too little, too late as far as England’s World Cup prospects were concerned.

The reaction was understandably one of disappointment from an England perspective, with Tuchel’s set-up and strategy coming under fire.

The man himself said he had no regrets about his tactics, insisting they were necessary in the context of the game.

Tuchel spoke the following day and suggested there was little he could do to change the game.

"In this moment my feeling was no structure in the world could have helped us," Tuchel said. "Because actually we were too passive and we were not physical enough.

"We didn't stop runners arriving in our box and the deliveries were wrong too.

"I haven't seen the data yet, but I think just right after the goal the momentum swings completely and ball possession drops dramatically.

"We couldn't find any duels any more; that's why we dropped deeper and deeper. It was never the plan, but it happened.

"[We] couldn't stop the runners from the second line, the midfielders, through our gaps, and the deliveries were on the highest level. You need to get back on the ball; otherwise you cannot break the pressure, and you cannot get the momentum back.

"I think ball possession plays a crucial role, It's maybe not in our DNA like it is in the Spanish DNA or Argentinian-Brazilian DNA, to take the ball and control the game with the ball."

Reports suggest that Tuchel, who signed a contract extension prior to the tournament, will be kept on to lead England into the UEFA European Championship in two years' time, but what do you think?

With the next Euros being held in the UK and Ireland, England are likely to be among the favourites.

Following that tournament, the chance to redeem themselves on the world stage comes in the form of the 2030 World Cup hosted primarily across Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

But should Tuchel be the man to lead England into either or both these tournaments?

Many fans and pundits alike were displeased with the way the Argentina match panned out, pointing the finger at Tuchel’s tactical approach.

England failed to capitalise in a strong position, harking back to tournament exits of years gone by.

However, defeat could prove a painful but useful learning experience for the future, if the manager is willing to be flexible.

The expectation when he was hired in 2024 was that he would take England to the next level following Gareth Southgate’s tenure.

With his predecessor also reaching a World Cup semi-final back in 2018, Tuchel is yet to better that particular achievement.

If he remains in situ for future tournaments, will he ever actually ‘bring it home’?
