Erling Haaland, playing in his first World Cup, has been in fine form with seven goals in four games - including a brace to send home five-time winners Brazil in their round-of-16 clash.

For The Three Lions, Harry Kane has netted six times across five games, the last of which was from the spot and proved to be the winning goal in England’s breathless victory over co-hosts Mexico.

This followed a late brace to claw England from behind to beat DR Congo in the previous round, and three goals – two against Croatia and one against Panama – in the group stage.

The Bayern Munich striker, 32, is now on 85 England goals and 14 at World Cups, leading both categories for his country.

Meanwhile, Haaland sits on 62 goals for Norway, remarkably from just 54 appearances, averaging more than a goal a game.

His strikes at the tournament to date comprise the winner against Cote d’Ivoire in the round of 32, plus a brace of braces in the group stage, against Iraq and Senegal.

The fact he was rested for the final group-stage game against France makes his feat all the more astonishing.

”They’re all sharks,” said England boss Thomas Tuchel when asked about Kane and Haaland, as well as fellow World Cup Golden Boot contenders Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

”If they smell blood, they come and score.”

Between the two, Haaland is averaging almost two goals per 90 minutes compared to Kane’s 1.2, and has a marginally better xG than his English rival going into their Miami showdown.

Positionally, Haaland has been mostly operating inside the penalty area, where around a quarter of his open-play touches and all but one of his goals have come from.

That all seven strikes have come from open play suggests that Tuchel and the England backline could have their work cut out attempting to stop him adding to his tally for the tournament.

Kane’s strikes have a bit more of a spread, with two coming from the penalty spot but also slightly more variation, having scored three headers compared to one from Haaland.

The Norwegian’s second goal against Brazil was his sole strike from outside the penalty area, but while he leads Kane on this metric, the England captain’s decisive second against DR Congo more than demonstrated his prowess in shooting from distance, even if it was just inside the 18-yard box.

The majority of Kane’s in-game touches have come in central areas just outside the box, seeing him operate almost as much as a support striker as a No. 9, contributing to England’s build-up play and allowing the likes of Jude Bellingham to run beyond him.

This has worked to devastating effect, as seen against both Croatia and Mexico, with the Real Madrid midfielder getting on the scoresheet in both games and Kane providing an assist in the latter game.

Both players are coming off the back of typically fruitful seasons at their respective clubs, with Haaland netting 38 times in total for Manchester City.

His 27 Premier League goals landed him a third Golden Boot in just four seasons in England – the same number Kane collected during his entire Tottenham Hotspur career.

He also scored eight times in the UEFA Champions League despite City’s round-of-16 exit to Real Madrid, and three FA Cup goals helped his side ultimately go on to lift the trophy in May.

Haaland's goals against Brazil took him up to 58 for the season.

Kane, on the other hand, scored an astonishing 61 times for Bayern alone across all competitions, including 36 in the Bundesliga.

Counting his goals for England, he is currently on 73 since the start of the campaign, sitting only behind Messi’s 82 in 2012/13 while playing for Barcelona for most goals in a season.

Both players come into the match in impressive form and neither will back down when presented with an opportunity to build on their respective individual records to benefit their team.

In what could be a tense and tight encounter, the predatory instinct of the two opposing frontmen is expected to be the difference between a place in the semi-final and a trip home.
