France v Spain - 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final result as Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty and Pedro Porro's strike send La Roja into the final

Spain advanced to their second World Cup final after a convincing 2-0 victory over France in Dallas.

It was a scoreline which few would have seen coming against Didier Deschamps' heavily-fancied side, who had previously swept aside every obstacle placed in their path.

However, once Mikel Oyarzabal fired Spain in front from the penalty spot, there only looked like being one winner.

France looked desperately off the pace in comparison, best epitomised when Lucas Digne showed no spatial awareness whatsoever when inadvertently lashing out on Lamine Yamal in the box.

The Real Sociedad forward made no mistake from the spot, as Les Bleus fell behind for the first time at these finals.

A bad first half would get worse when William Saliba was forced off injured with what looked like a back injury, and Maxence Lacroix entered the fray.

Pedro Porro would then inflict a devastating hammer blow on France's World Cup hopes just two minutes shy of the hour mark with a fine finish following a neat one-two with Dani Olmo.

Lamine Yamal was then denied a third after a marginal offside call, with Deschamps' team firmly on the ropes.

Les Bleus' World Cup campaign ends with a whimper, but this was a superb display from a La Roja side that has largely gone under the radar up to this point.

The world will certainly be taking notice now, as Spain extended their unbeaten run in matches after 90 minutes to 37 games, equalling Italy's record and setting up a clash with either Argentina or England in New Jersey on Sunday.

He told ITV: "It's a dream come true. Truly, it was my biggest dream. Very, very happy for the team. From the start to the end we played a great game. We did everything possible today to be able to go through.
"We knew we were facing a very, very tough team, and we did everything so well. This is a team effort, it's not about me. I just want to say congratulations to everybody for producing such a great performance."

On preventing France from playing their own game: "Of course, we knew this [having the ball], was one of the things that would take us closer to the final. Their counter-attack is their strong suit and stopping that was key."

On his substitution: "I don't know what minute I was brought off, but I just could not give any more, but as I said before, this victory was achieved by everyone, all 26 of us. Now we keep going. At the moment, I am dead, but we will recover and then give everything for the final."

He told ITV: "[They showed] every part of the game. We talk about playing as a team, fighting, defending, their work-rate off the ball.

"We know how good they are in possession. They were a goal threat. These guys are used to winning. They’re European champions. They turn up. It was a joy to watch.

"They controlled every aspect of the game. We’ve been criticising France, but it’s also about giving credit to Spain. Absolutely fantastic, and they also have that pride in defending."

He told ITV: "We're talking about a manager [Didier Deschamps] who's won amazing things but you do have to look at why he didn't take him [Lucas Digne] off earlier. He was really struggling at half time, I said that he was hanging on for dear life and what you see in this second goal is the classic covering yourself and you're basically going too wide towards your wide player because you don't want him to run at you.

"He reads the initial threat, but he's got to get his legs back up again, he's working those legs but then he's frightened of Lamine Yamal getting the ball to his feet, so he goes up, and then he's got to get back but he doesn't. He stays where he is."

Roy Keane on Spain, said: "These guys are used to winning, it's a joy to watch, and it felt more than a 2-0 victory.

Gary Neville said: "It was an absolutely incredible performance from Spain and in many ways it was decided by the contrast between the two sets of full-backs. We're in a bit of shock as we all tipped France to go through, but they've been blown away."

Ian Wright said: "It was the structure over individuality. I'm just shocked that it's happened so easily."

Patrick Vieira said: "France didn't turn up at all. Spain were tactically all over the French team. Spain stopped Olise from playing. He couldn't get into the game, and Spain just didn't let France get comfortable on the ball. There was a big expectation for France to win the World Cup. We're disappointed with the result, but mostly with the performance. It wasn't just that some of them were missing. All of them were missing. Collectively, we were really bad.

That will be either England or Argentina, as the two sides collide in Atlanta tomorrow in the second World Cup semi-final.
