Argentina and Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, who is on duty at the World Cup with his country this summer, believes the "best solution" may be a transfer away from the La Liga giants before next season.

Alvarez has been heavily linked with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano after the 2026 World Cup.

A switch to Spanish champions Barcelona has been mooted with the Blaugrana in the market for a new forward following Robert Lewandowski's exit.

The 26-year-old is also supposedly wanted by Premier League pair Arsenal and Chelsea, with a return to England a possibility.

European champions Paris Saint-Germain were also credited with an interest in Alvarez when he left Manchester City for Atletico Madrid in 2024.

And moments after Argentina's 2-0 World Cup win over Austria, Alvarez conceded now is not the time to talk about his future, but openly discussed the possibility of leaving Diego Simeone's side this summer.

"Honestly, I don't know. I don't think this is the right time to talk, but I can't hide either," Alvarez told reporters after the Group J clash.

"I try to be an honest person. I've spoken with the people at the club, with those I needed to speak to.

"I think a transfer is the best solution for everyone, and I want to fulfil my dream."

Real Madrid lodged Alvarez bid

Alvarez's comments come shortly after Real Madrid lodged an audacious £130 million bid to sign the Argentine from their city rivals.

The offer came two days after Florentino Perez was re-elected club president, the Real supremo having promised the signing of a huge name during his campaign.

"Real Madrid CF announces that, following the meeting of the board of directors held today, it has made an offer of €150 million to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian Alvarez," the club said in a statement.

"After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Club Atletico de Madrid has expressed its gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player's release clause."

It does remain to be seen whether Real Madrid will return for an improved bid following Alvarez's comments.

Los Blancos, who announced Jose Mourinho's return to the Santiago Bernabeu helm once Perez was re-elected, have already made a splash in the summer market, having signed Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate and Marc Cucurella since the start of June.
