MBAPPE SENDS FRANCE INTO LAST EIGHT
Kylian Mbappe scored the only goal from the penalty spot as France won a bad-tempered last-16 clash with Paraguay to set up a quarter-final with Morocco.
Although the only game they have not won by at least two clear goals, Didier Deschamps will be glad to have navigated an encounter where his side kept their composure despite the opposition employing the dark arts of defending to keep them at bay and provoke them. The referee provided little assistance, booking three French players and not punishing Paraguay players at all.
The South American side held out very well in the first half, with France only shooting from long range, without really testing goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
In the second half, Gill was called upon to make a good stop from Manu Kone before, shortly after coming on as a substitute, Desire Doue dribbled into the box and was felled by Diego Gomez.
Despite delaying the spot kick and Juan Caceres trying to rough up the penalty spot, Mbappe coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way for his seventh of the tournament - putting him alongside Lionel Messi in the golden boot race.
Deep into injury time it looked like Mbappe was going to add to his tally, but Gill parried his first effort then smothered the star’s driven follow-up.

MBAPPE: THEY THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO PLAY IN TUXEDOS...
The penalty puts him level in the golden boot race with seven goals alongside Lionel Messi, and ahead on the assists tie break. He also has a many goals in World Cups (19) as he has games.
After the game he said: "If we have to get our hands dirty, we will get our hands dirty. They thought we were going to play in tuxedos."

UPAMECANO GOES DOWN IN OWN AREA
The referee blows up for a foul as the ball was played into the French area, but there was not much in it and you don't like seeing your centre half go down like that.

He barged the defender over and then was caught by a kick out on his shin pad. He was hoping VAR would come into the game but there was no interference.
BBC commentator Steve Wilson: "How has that not been seen? I don't understand how the referee hasn't seen that. David Beckham got sent off for that in 1998."

    HYDRATION BREAK
Players from either team are shouting at and pushing each other. Almiron and Gill exchange shoves.
The BBC's Stephen Warnock is getting quite worked up about the Paraguayan tactics:
"There's playing tough and fair and then there's playing tough and unfair. That challenge on Rabiot was really poor. It was unacceptable as he went out to injure a player."
