Turkiye 3-2 USA - World Cup result as Kaan Ayhan scores winner with last kick of the game against hosts

Turkiye finally scored in their third match and won with the last kick of a thrilling game against the United States to take home some measure of consolation after a very disappointing World Cup.

Eight minutes into injury time, Salih Ozcan's deep cross found Can Uzun at the back post and his shot squirmed under Matt Turner, with Alex Freeman's block on the line only setting up Kaan Ayhan to nudge home the winner.

After losing to Australia and Paraguay, Turkiye went into the match with no hope of qualification and made seven changes to their side, while the United States - already confirmed as group leaders - made nine alterations.

This led to an open match where neither side looked overly concerned with defending, and the hosts took the lead after three minutes through Auston Trusty, after sloppy marking left him alone at the back post from a corner.

Turkiye grew into the match and Arda Guler combined well with Baris Yilmaz for the former to equalise. The Real Madrid star set up Evren Elmali, whose low cross was converted by Yilmaz.

The United States were back on level terms early in the second half through Sebastian Berhalter's low drive.

They could have gone in front through Christian Pulisic, who was given a standing ovation when entering play as a substitute and looked sharp on his return from injury, when he inadvertently deflected a cross goalwards, which Ugurcan Cakir tipped onto the post.

USA will now play Bosnia & Herzegovina in the round of 32, while Australia qualify in second place after drawing with Paraguay.

A scrappy winner as a cross finds Uzun in space at the far post and his shot nutmegs the goalkeeper and desperate defending from the hosts only pushes the ball into the path of Ayhan who nudged home.

But he was in an offside position anyway.

Aydin and Yilmaz are replaced by Muldur and Kahveci.

It looked innocuous as his left leg caught Aydin on his follow through. It would be heartbreaking for him and a big blow for the United States if he is out of the next match.

The Turkiye forward did well to out-muscle Trusty but the tussle left him off-balance and he could not connect with a shot from eight yards out.

He has put in a decent shift McKennie.

Aydin with a decent cross from the right flank but Robinson dealt with the danger well, clearing with a header.

The ball is camped in the Turkey half at present.

He created space for himself 25 yards out from goal, but his effort was just a yard wide of the target.

Freeman, Dest and Zendejas come on for Aaronson, Reyna and Scally.

He turns in on his right foot from the left edge of the penalty area and aims a curling effort which just does not come back enough.

Turner cleared the ball into the defender under pressure from Yilmaz but the keeper recovered to beat the striker to the loose ball.

He pulls back into a dangerous area but no team-mate is there to turn the ball home.

And that is the end of the third quarter.

Pulisic didn't know much about it but a deflected cross hits against him and the ball loops in the air and may have gone in off the post had Cakir not got a feather onto it. The keeper is now getting treatment after crashing into the post.

He runs into the box with the ball and, with Pepi not free in the middle, he shoots from a narrow angle but Cakir blocks the effort and Aaronson's follow-up goes wide.
