USA v Bosnia and Herzegovina - World Cup result as co-hosts advance as Folarin Balogun scores and is sent off, Malik Tillman nets free-kick

The United States of America are through to the Round of 16 of their home World Cup after seeing off an unambitious Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 despite a red card for talismanic striker Folarin Balogun.

Balogun opened the scoring for The Stars and Stripes but will now miss the last-16 clash against Belgium after he unintentionally yet painfully trod on Tarik Muharemovic in the second half and was sent off after a VAR review.

However, after Bosnia struggled to shift into top gear against 10 men, Malik Tillman put the result beyond doubt with a sumptuous free kick in the 83rd minute.

It was just desserts for Mauricio Pochettino’s side who had two goals correctly ruled out for offside and were the only team looking to take the initiative in Santa Clara, but needed to wait until just before the lead.

After Balogun thought he’d opened the scoring 10 minutes earlier, the outstanding Tillman latched onto a loose ball and played it into the penalty area where Muharemovic couldn’t control it, allowing the striker to steal in and fire past Nikola Vasilj.

Then after Tyler Adams and Edin Dzeko appeared to have shaken off a nasty collision, the veteran striker was substituted early in the second half ending what could be his final international appearance, but Sergej Barbarez’s attacking changes failed to spark his side into life.

Bosnia’s luck appeared to have turned when Balogun saw red just before the hydration break, yet they failed to turn more possession into meaningful chances until stoppage time, and by then they were 2-0 down thanks to Tillman’s masterful free-kick.

The US will play Belgium in the early hours of Tuesday morning next week, with the winner potentially facing Spain or Portugal in the quarter-finals.

But not quite in the way Folarin Balogun would've wanted...

The hosts go marching on! It's certainly not the perfect victory as the US will be without frontman Folarin Balogun for their Round of 16 clash with Belgium, but they swatted aside a ragged Bosnian side whose wait for a World Cup knockout victory goes on.

Memic breaks forwards on the counter but with teammates either side of him, he flashes a shot just wide of Freese's other post.

That will almost certainly be Bosnia's last chance.

Bosnia may be wishing they'd started taking potshots earlier, as they've had two really good efforts in stoppage time.

This time Memic, who hits a swerving shot across Freese's goal that very nearly sneaks in.

The ball is at the wrong end of the pitch for Bosnia, who will disappointed they haven't tested Freese enough since Balogun's red card.

More seconds melt away as Giovanni Reyna is on for McKennie, who's been excellent as ever.

Alajbegovic fires across goal from the edge of the area and it flashes past the post with Freese frozen on his line. That needed to float in for Bosnia as the clock continues to tick down.

For the first time since that dangerous early corner, Freese looked a bit panicked there, rushing out of goal to defend a cross and barely getting any conact.

But his teammates clear the ball and they still look in full control as we enter extra time.

Pochettino had all of his substitute windows left to run down the clock, and uses one of them now to remove Christian Pulisic and Serginio Dest for Ricardo Pepi and Sebastian Berhalter.

Matt Freese gathered the ball, then stays down milking a slight tap on the back from Demirovic.

However, it's a daft thing for the striker to do at this stage of the game.

Tillman has been outstanding today and is rewarded with the goal that surely clinches victory for America.

He dinked his effortover a wall whose view was somewhat obscured by Richards, Vasilj got a hand to it but took a tiny step to the left as Tillman shot and he couldn't get back across in time.

With Dzeko and Kolasinac both off the field, Bosnia are missing their two most senior players and someone nneeds to step up here.

Barbarez sees yellow on the touchline, then Radeljic is booked as the US line up a tempting free kick.

Tillman hasn't had quite the same impact in this half as the first but he almost set up America's second there!

He backheels the ball to McKennie and picks up the return ball, and though Vasilj saves the shot it bounces into the path of Pulisic who does score!

But once again, it's correctly ruled out for offside.

America's leaders come to the fore as Tim Ream calmly clears to Pulisic and he buys a foul to relieve the pressure and give The Stars and Stripes a shot at Vasilj's goal.

Unless we go to extra time, Barbarez has done all he can to help his team as he brings on Bosnia's last too substitutes.

The dangerous Amer Memic replaces Kolasinac, and striker Haris Tabakovic is on for Nikola Katic.

Bosnia have some towering set-piece targets but they've failed to use them so far. This time they take a corner short and work it round to Dedic, but the passing isn't crisp enough and Richards blocks the shot.

And we're flat out all the way to the finish now, in theory.

Whether that comes to pass looks more doubtful as the Bosnian defence struggle to move the ball forwards.

As we go to the hydration break, Balogun has already headed down the tunnel.

Demirovic is found in the penalty ahead and fires a skidding shot through Richards' legs at Freese!

Unfortunately the shot was too central, but that's still probably Bosnia's best chance of the match.
