England boss Thomas Tuchel said Jordan Henderson's injury "looks really bad" as he needed oxygen after hurting his wrist after hurdling an advertising board in the celebrations following their 3-2 win over Mexico to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

The former captain was stretchered off with an oxygen mask, miring the post-match joy after The Three Lions battled the altitude and passionate home fans to snatch a stunning victory.

Henderson was an unused substitute, although he did pick up a booking on the sidelines towards the end of the match, and has only played six minutes this tournament, coming on late in the 2-0 group-stage win over Panama.

Tuchel gave a sobering update on the 36-year-old's condition.

"Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist," he said. "It looks really bad. It's a quite serious injury, and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital."

Jude Bellingham added: ”The medical team have got everything under control. It is best not to give too much detail when I don’t know everything."

Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham's quick-fire brace towards the end of the first half looked to put England in control, but Julian Quinones struck back after Ezri Konsa failed to clear a free-kick.

Jarell Quansah saw red for a dangerous tackle after a VAR review, but Kane restored the two-goal advantage with a penalty five minutes later.

Raul Jimenez profited from a Kane foul to make it 3-2 from the spot, but Mexico could not find a way through the England defence in the final 20 minutes.

'Just not good enough' - Tuchel questions referee choices

The match was not without drama, featuring two penalties, a red card and plenty of flashpoints to keep both the referees and VAR team on their toes.

Quansah was initially not penalised for his tackle on Jesus Gallardo, but replays showed that he caught the winger on the shin with his studs and referee Alireza Faghani promptly overturned his decision and brandished the red card.

There was little doubt about England's penalty as Anthony Gordon was tripped by the onrushing Raul Rangel, but Mexico's penalty decision was more contentious.

Kane looked to have got away with the incident, but the VAR team of Nicolas Gallo Barragan and Juan Lara, from Colombia and Chile respectively, sent Faghani to the monitor again, and they judged Kane did not get a touch on the ball when he caught Brian Gutierrez's boot.

Tuchel bemoaned the decision, implying the choice of three South Americans as VAR officials might have affected their judgement.

He said: "Just not good enough. Referees are just not good enough. Fourth officials are just not good enough. That’s the bottom line.

"I think three people at the VAR are from South America in a match like this. Is this a clear and obvious error for the mistake for the penalty? I’m not sure.

”He did not even give the foul, he didn’t even overturn a yellow into a red, they overturn a situation where he doesn't even give a foul. No, referee’s not good enough, and the fourth official’s not good enough."

However, Bellingham was more diplomatic. While he seemed to agree England were hard done by, he was happy to look on the positive side that it ultimately did not cost his side.

He said: "In terms of the refereeing decisions, it is what it is, as easy as it is to say now.

"They’re human, so no worries, we got through.”
