MotoGP: Marc Marquez says he was ‘trying to be too fast’ as championship leader grabs 2025 Grand Prix Aragon pole position

Marc Marquez currently holds a 24-point lead at the top of the standings for the 2025 MotoGP campaign. The six-time world champion took pole in qualifying on Saturday ahead of the two races for the weekend in Spain. His younger brother, Alex, is second in the world championship at the moment, and he was second in the qualifying session as he looks to narrow the gap.

Ducati Lenovo rider Marc Marquez said he was "trying to be too fast" despite claiming pole at Grand Prix Aragon on Saturday morning.
Marquez tops the world championship standings and has given himself the best chance of extending that lead ahead of Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s full-length race, both live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
Marquez’s nearest challenger is his younger brother, Gresini Racing’s Alex Marquez, who took second spot, with VR Racing’s Franco Morbidelli in third.
Marc was aggressive throughout the session and there were a couple of ragged moments where he was on the edge of controlling his bike.
Speaking after qualifying, he conceded that he was pushing hard: "The first lap with the first tyre was clean.
"I just did one lap and then I stopped because I was already [one minute and] 45.9 without exaggerating, but then I exaggerated too much [on my next attempt].

"[I was] trying to be too fast, even lost time. Of course, the riding style for the main race and the sprint is different, but the lap was not the smoothest lap of my life."
Marquez tops the race standings with 196 points, while Alex has 172.

Francesco Bagnaia, Ducati Lenovo's other rider, is in third spot on 124 points.
Marquez currently holds the record for wins at Aragon, with six victories at the track.
