Former World Superbike champion Neil Hodgson praised Marc Marquez as “incredible” after he won the Australia MotoGP on Sunday.

Marquez has now moved up to third in the championship standings, behind Francesco Bagnaia in second spot, and leader Jorge Martin.

His ability was underlined by a dramatic, late overtake of Martin to claim the win, a resilient showing after his second-place finish in the sprint the day before, when he battled back from an early accident.

Hodgson, speaking to TNT Sports, said that the success was merely a reminder of the skills he has demonstrated over the course of a long and successful career.

He said of the 31-year-old: “It underlines what we already know, and I don’t mean that in a smug way. But we know his level is incredible.

“He’s an eight-time world champion [six in MotoGP, one in Moto2, and another in 125cc]. On an inferior machine, he made the Honda look better than it was.

“Unfortunately he got injured and nobody else could do it, that’s kind of why Honda are in their hole. We know his level is incredible. He started this season with no confidence.
