MotoGP: Joan Mir to miss Grand Prix San Marino Sprint and qualifying due to 'significant discomfort' but expected to compete in Sunday's event

Joan Mir suffered a heavy fall on Friday in practice and as a result has been ruled out of Saturday's action, meaning he will miss both qualifying and the Sprint at Grand Prix San Marino. His Honda HRC team confirmed that despite a problem with his neck, he is expected to be back on Sunday to take part in the full-length race at Misano.

Honda HRC rider Joan Mir will miss Saturday’s action at the 2025 Grand Prix San Marino through injury.
The 28-year-old Spaniard did not set a time at practice on Saturday, after suffering a heavy crash at Turn 9 at Misano on Friday.
As a result, he is unable to race on Saturday, and will therefore miss qualifying and the Sprint race.
Mir finished 12th last weekend at Grand Prix Catalunya, and is in 18th place in the MotoGP world championship standings on 50 points, so there is little to be gained from risking his health as there is no chance of a title challenge.
In a statement on the official X account for Honda HRC, the team wrote: "After his fall yesterday, @JoanMirOfficial continued to experience significant discomfort and limited mobility in his neck."
However, Mir is considered fit to race, and is missing the action on Saturday in order to better prepare for Sunday’s race, which will be shown live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
The statement concluded: "Mir has been declared fit. He and Honda HRC have elected to miss today's running to focus on Sunday."
Mir had been the sixth-fastest rider on Friday, and was due to take place in Q2 on Saturday.
As a result, he is certain to finish at least 12th on the grid for Sunday’s event.
World championship leader Marc Marquez of Ducati Lenovo was the quickest rider in the second practice in San Marino, though he appeared to be struggling to find his best form on the right-handed corners in the third sector of the track, with Marquez typically dominating with his skill on left-handed turns.
His team-mate Francesco Bagnaia was at times the fastest rider on the circuit, and finished as the fourth quickest one when the racing was over.
Bagnaia has struggled to match the Spaniard’s pace this season and is well off a world title challenge.

However, a recent change to his bike setup at Balaton Park in Hungary encouraged him, and he finished strongly in seventh at MotoGP Catalunya. There has been frustration with the rider and the team about his difficulties so far this season and so his good pace on Friday gives a sense of cautious optimism ahead of the weekend’s competition.
Marquez’s younger brother and closest title rival, Alex Marquez, was fifth fastest in his BK8 Gresini, and he will hope to repeat his success of the previous Sunday, when he won the full-length race, after disappointingly crashing out of the Sprint the day before after leading for much of the event.
