Jamaica completed a 55-49 victory over Uganda to take a stride towards qualification from Pool B. After being beaten on Sunday by New Zealand, the Sunshine Girls needed a win to boost their qualification hopes. Despite being behind after the opening quarter Jamaica rallied with veteran goal shooter Romelda Aiken-George providing the points needed for victory.

Jamaica beat Uganda and take step towards semi-final spot

Jamaica took a stride towards booking a semi-final spot in the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games netball with a hard-fought 55-49 win against Uganda.

Uganda came into the match having won their opening two group matches against lower ranked sides and looked to stun a Jamaica side who had lost to New Zealand the previous day.

Sharp shooting from Shadia Nassanga and Mary Cholhok saw Uganda lead 12-15 after the opening quarter and on course for a huge upset.

Despite looking tired from their exploits against the Silver Ferns less than 24 hours earlier, Jamaica came back into the game and dominated the second quarter to lead 29-25.

Veteran goal shooter Romelda Aiken-George led the Sunshine Girls’ attack but faced tough opposition from goal defender Gloria Ayaa.

Uganda rallied after the half-time break and an end-to-end battle developed with both sides scoring 14 points each in the 15-minute period.

Heading into the final quarter Jamaica went full strength to secure the victory and key defender Shamera Sterling-Humphrey kept them ahead.

Fellow replacement Shanice Beckford added further goals as Jamaica ran out winners by 55-49.

The result puts Jamaica in a strong position to finish second in the group with lower ranked Trinidad and Tobago and Wales to follow.

Uganda face having to beat New Zealand on Tuesday before a final game against Trinidad and Tobago.

It was much closer than the Sunshine Girls will have wanted. However, they have picked up a vital win in their bid to quality for the last four. Jamaica came back in the second quarter and then held on for a big win.

The She Cranes enter the last three minutes with an opportunity of a huge win. However, Ward makes a key interception resulting in Beckford scoring.

Ayaa continues to thrive

Uganda goal defence Gloria Ayaa has been excellent during this match. She snatches the ball away from Aiken-George with ease and then rushes forward in attack.

Aiken-George winding back the years

Q4 – Jamaica 50-44 Uganda

The 37-year-old has played two full matches back-to-back for Jamaica and played key roles in both. She has the aid of Beckford in this quarter to draw in defenders.

Jamaica beat their opponents in the Commonwealth Games semi-final four years ago but came out narrow losers in a close group match.
