Kate Zachary admits Trailfinders must overcome Saracens 'kryptonite' in Premiership Women’s Rugby final - 'Superman eventually figures it out'

Kate Zackary has admitted that Saracens have been Trailfinders' "kryptonite" in the past three years as the two sides prepare to meet in Sunday’s Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) final at the Twickenham Stoop.

Trailfinders have been the surprise package of their third PWR campaign, beating three-time champions Gloucester-Hartpury Women to reach their first-ever final.

There they will face Sarries, who edged out Exeter Chiefs 40-38, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.

Trailfinders are the underdogs, with Sarries having beaten them in all six of their meetings in the past three years, including two heavy losses this term.

"They've been our kryptonite," Zachary conceded to PWR. "But even Superman eventually figures it out, doesn’t he?

"It was similar when I came up against them during my time at Exeter. Their player retention has been outstanding. Since the league began, they've kept a core group together, and their staff has remained stable as well.

"Across the league, lots of clubs have had coaching changes, but they've had continuity. When you have consistency in both players and coaches which makes them destructive when you don’t have too much change year after year.”

On reaching the final she added: "I still haven't found one word to describe it. It's surreal. It's immense. It's such a cool opportunity for a young club.

"The growth of the club has been amazing. To get here this quickly, especially as a London club, competing with teams like Harlequins and Saracens that have such a strong legacy in the area, says a lot about the work the players and coaches have put in. It's great that we've earned this opportunity.

"Honestly, it wasn't until about the back third of the season [that they realised what the team was capable of[. Probably later than people would expect.

"Before the Six Nations break, that Friday night game against Harlequins was the moment. If you look at our results across the season, we probably weren't the team people expected us to be. We had the talent and the signings, but things hadn't quite clicked.

"That Harlequins game was the first moment where we thought, 'okay, maybe we're in it'. We put ourselves in a position where, after the Six Nations, we only needed three points from the Gloucester and Saracens.

"Then came Gloucester under the Friday night lights after the Six Nations, and, after that, it felt like the sky was the limit."

Royer: You feel emotion creeping into peoples’ voices

Sarries are aiming to make amends for last season’s final defeat, when they lost 34-19 to Gloucester-Hartpury at their home ground, the StoneX Stadium.

And back row Laetitia Royer has admitted that Sarries will look to "consume" Trailfinders from the first moment.

"It is not that hard to say what result we want on Sunday," Royer wrote, in Rugby Pass. "We want to win. That is pretty simple.

"The other week, when we were talking ahead of the Chiefs game, we were talking about throwing the first punch, and not reacting to them. We want to impose ourselves off the bat. We have been a bit too reactive this season. We want to show them what’s up.

"Honestly, we want to consume Trailfinders with a tsunami of Saracens shirts right from the first minute. Personally, I want to be the first person to land one of those big hits. I want to impose myself on everything that we do, and have a truly dominant performance.

"If we can dominate from the very first minute, have a big impact - it would not necessarily make the game easier - but could set us up for success."

She continued: "You can feel emotion creeping into people’s voices when they talk about the Premiership Women’s Rugby Final now. They want to win it. They want to go for the W. We’re going to step up. It is just right for Saracens to win it.

"There is a lot of emotion. Every leader wants to talk more. Every leader wants to say more things."

The 2026/27 Premiership Women’s Rugby final between Saracens and Trailfinders will take place on Sunday, June 28.
