Matt Weston won Team GB’s long-awaited first medal of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics as he claimed a dominant gold in the men’s skeleton.

Weston came into the Games as one of Britain's medal favourites - and he did not disappoint.

After breaking the track record in his first three runs, he went into the final heat with a lead of 0.39 seconds over second-placed Axel Jungk.

Weston finished in style as he set another track record to win by 0.88s.

The podium was completed by the German duo of Jungk and Christopher Grotheer, who finished with times of 3:44.21 and 3:44.40 respectively.

Britain's Marcus Wyatt finished ninth after moving up a position following the fourth and final run.

Speaking after the victory, Weston told TNT Sports: "It's crazy...it's a feeling unlike anything else.

"I was saying I've been fortunate enough to win World Championships and European Championships and things like that and this blows them all out the water. This is absolutely incredible. I can't describe it. I feel like I'm in a blur and it's amazing."

"I can't sum it up. The feelings are unlike anything I've ever had before. The pure emotional, it's just overwhelming seeing my fiancee and everyone back at home that's been supporting me over the years.

"It means so much and to have them here...it means so much to me and it means everything."

The magnitude of Weston’s achievement cannot be underestimated after becoming the first British individual male gold medal winner at a Winter Olympic Games since former figure skater Robin Cousins 46 years ago.

This victory also completes a clean sweep for Weston, who is already a two-time world champion, two-time European champion and has three overall World Cup titles to his name.

Weston’s winning run was greeted with scenes of celebration in the TNT Sports studio, with 2010 skeleton gold medallist Amy Williams paying a glowing tribute to the 28-year-old.

She said: "Just incredible, he's done it...he's gone and got gold. It just means so much. You can see it on his face. It means so much to all of us.

"He got better and better with every single run, track record. He perfected himself and his own performance every single time he got down on that sled.

"It was incredible to watch, just to be able to witness that and the history that he's done, it's not going to hit him."

Weston's gold medal is the 13th which Great Britain have achieved at a Winter Olympics, and the fourth in the skeleton.

He became the first man to achieve this feat following Williams' aforementioned success in 2010, which preceded Lizzy Yarnold's gold medals in 2014 and 2018 respectively.
