'Like Ronnie O'Sullivan in his pomp' - Zak Surety makes World Snooker Championship history with four-century feat despite defeat

While embroiled in the newest iteration of their fierce rivalry, Ronnie O'Sullivan and Ali Carter could not help but take interest in what was occurring behind the board that separated them from Table 2 on Tuesday's afternoon session at The Crucible. Indeed, history was in the process of being made by debutant Zak Surety, who was displaying characteristics of "O'Sullivan in his pomp".

Despite an eventual defeat, Zak Surety sparked memories of Ronnie O'Sullivan "in his pomp" with a record-breaking century feat at The Crucible.

On Table 2, opposite O'Sullivan himself and rival Ali Carter, Surety ensured he would become the first-ever World Championship debutant to hit four centuries in a match. Even more impressively, he completed the feat within a span of five frames.

Surety's inspired break-building could not help him to a maiden victory on the world stage, however, as he crashed out of the tournament via a 10-7 defeat to Ding Junhui.

And despite the high-billing of the grudge match taking place on Table 1, TNT Sports commentator Dave Hendon said O'Sullivan, Carter and indeed the crowd could not help but gaze towards the high-octane clash on the other side of the dividing wall.

"These two Essex men are watching the scoreboard on the other side because another Essex man, Zak Surety, has just made his fourth century. This is unprecedented, a debutant making four centuries.

"It seems actually this match is the one that's been built up, but this crowd are really getting involved next door. They like to see great snooker. He's a new face to many of them and he's playing like O'Sullivan in his pomp. Incredible."

Fellow TNT Sports commentator Neal Foulds added: "He's playing like a man possessed over there. He's such a lively character. He's really doing well."

In the end, it was a tricky start to the opening session which truly put paid to Surety's chances of a debut victory. On Monday, he fell 4-0 behind as Ding ran rampant in the early exchanges.

While the 33-year-old Englishman dragged it back to 6-3 ahead of the decisive session, his fine Tuesday work was ultimately undone by the endurance-focused format of the Crucible tournament.

Ding, speaking to TNT Sports after the match, said he thought Surety was "too nervous" in the opening session, and was relieved to hold off his fightback in the second.

"The first session he was too nervous to play at the start." Ding said. "You see different snooker today; he played unbelievable snooker today to keep punishing me."
