Trump roars back to lead Wilson 5-4

A thrilling session saw Judd Trump start poorly then come back swinging, turning a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 lead. Gary Wilson, who played well, has plenty to do to restore his equilibrium before this evening's deciding session. Wilson took the opening two frames then, at 3-1, a total clearance emphasised his superiority over a struggling Trump. But The Ace, though lauded for his natural talent, is as fierce a competitor as exists in the game, and he pinched the sixth then stole the seventh with a tremendous clearance, before a ludicrous fluke allowed a 128 break and another facilitated a run of 97, Wilson left raising eyebrows and shaking head. He's got a lot of work to do tonight, but will fear he has already missed his chance.

Luck and genius are a potent combination.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 4-4 Wilson (69-26)

Yup, Judd secures the frame and the lead, a completely different player to the one we saw earlier.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 4-4 Wilson (26-26)

Of course, the frame isn't over, but things seem be moving in a direction.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 4-4 Wilson (13-26)

And he drains the pot too, but an unwanted cannon means a nasty red to corner ... missed. So Judd goes righty to slip home an opener ... only to lose the white, which races down the table. He's feeling it, though, so he opts to take on a brown to middle, going at it hard and missing ... but it goes across the table, then back the other way, dropping into the original bag, and leaving him nicely on the next ball! This game! Sat in his chair, Gary raises eyebrows, but he'll know the truth: the snooker gods are punishing him for allowing frame seven to be stolen from him.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 4-4 Wilson (0-20)

He might be feeling a way, but Gary is still a fine player in fine form, and he floats a fine opener into the yellow bag, the breaks the pack off black a few shots later, and he's on a difficult one to middle. It's not ideal, but so far this is a good response.

Chris Wakelin 4-3 Liam Pullen

Gary will be wondering, and rightly so. The stealing of frame seven has changed everything, a 128 break in the books.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 3-4 Wilson (78-0)

Frame secure, Judd splatters a plant to corner, and there's a ton in the offing. This is beautiful work.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 3-4 Wilson (29-0)

Judd builds and he's into this now. Already, you fear Gary has missed his chance.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 3-4 Wilson (5-0)

Judd goes hard at one to right corner, misses ... and somehow, the ball rolls down the table, hits the shite, and drops in the yellow bag! The flow is this match might just've changed.

World Championship LIVE - on table two

Chris Wakelin 4-2 Liam Pullen

World Championship LIVE - Trump 3-4 Wilson

Exactly how you'd think they are: nails. A fantastic snooker, then a jazzer of a clearance, and hoeever they've played and whatever happens next, this'll be closeish going into the second session.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 2-4 Wilson (48-54)

...and it's there, but the white runs on! Cut-back black for the steal; how are your nerves, Joseph?

World Championship LIVE - Trump 2-4 Wilson (42-54)

...slotted, beautifully. This is great stuff, but when he reaches the pink, it's another minger, a mid-range diag, dead straight, to corner...

World Championship LIVE - Trump 2-4 Wilson (30-54)

And, after removing a few balls, he gets it ... but Gary escapes well, knowing he might soon have to go again ... and he does, the white left behind the green and near the baulk cushion, with the yellow sent up the table. That's a disgusting snooker, and this time, Gaz can't get out of it; if Judd removes all the balls, he takes the frame, but the yellow isn't easy, at all ... but he rams it home, brlliant pot. green along the baulk cushion next...

World Championship LIVE - Trump 2-4 Wilson (28-54)

It hasn't happened quite yet, but it's nearly there. I don't see what happens because my computer crashes, but Judd needs a snooker.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 2-4 Wilson (16-27)

Judd thinks he's found a plant to right corner so goes at it knowing he's sending claret all over, doesn't get close, and will be lucky to get back to the table in this frame. Should that happen, the next will be colossal.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 2-4 Wilson (16-20)

Judd picks out a plant but it's not dead set ... no matter, he clacks it home. But he soon drifts off a red and on to black cush; does he try a thin cut-back? I doubt it, and so does he, playing safe.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 2-4 Wilson (1-20)

Judd tries clipping to right corner, doesn't get close, so Gary gets away and breaks the pack ... landing on nowt. Except he then cannons the brown and is the red going into the green bag? Nope, it stays on the lip, so Judd hammers it down ... somehow failing to get on to a colour. Goodness, I'm not sure how he managed that.

World Championship LIVE - on table two

Chris Wakelin 3-1 Liam Pullen

World Championship LIVE - Trump 2-4 Wilson

Huge frame. Had Gary won it, he'd have been guaranteed a lead going into the evening's deciding session, but instead it's Judd who reduces his arrears.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-4 Wilson (64-5)

But Gary soon caresses into right corner ... but gets nowhere near the yellow, surprisingly so. Can Judd see enough of a red to pot it, though? Dom thinks not ... but he can, without even using the nearby blue which widens the pocket and from here, he'll surely close out the frame.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-4 Wilson (51-0)

Blue to yellow bag ... missed! But will it roll down the rail into left corner? It will not! Judd's not playing with his usual panache, and will be relieved when Gary misses a cut-back clear-up.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-4 Wilson (37-0)

Another nice red, though, drifted into left corner, allows Judd another go at settling, a cut-back black keeping him going but leaving a horrible mid-range red ... dispatched.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-4 Wilson (12-0)

Judd's long-potting has been off so far today – and for much of the season, really - but he sinks one ... then soon runs out of position, playing safe He just can't get it going, a situation Gary knows may not sustain, increasing pressure on him to take advantage while he can.

World Championship LIVE - on table two

Chris Wakelin 3-1 Liam Pullen

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-4 Wilson

Gary wants a ton and from an angle, knucks in behind a red, sending it down the side rail ... and in. A total clearance of 139 lays down the smack and then some; Judd is in trouble.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-3 Wilson (0-76)

Gary had to win his way through qualifying and, in the final round, frittered a huge lead against Xu Si only to pinch victory in a decider. He'll be feeling good about that, and he'll be feeling good about this too. Judd badly needs at least two of the four remaning frames in this session; really, he'll want three.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-3 Wilson (0-22)

OK, Judd tries clipping to right corner, overcuts, and leaves Gary a chance. This is a crucial visit because 3-1 is a manageable deficit, but should the lead grow beyond that, it's a problem. Meantime, Gary goes into the pack, but is he on one? Er, just, and now, with the the balls open, he'll fully expect to secure the frame at this visit.

World Championship LIVE - on table two

Chris Wakelin 2-1 Liam Pullen

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-3 Wilson

A fine mini-sesh from Gary, who leads by two at the interval.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-2 Wilson (15-64)

Cueing away from the object ball, Gary tries a pot to middle, white headed towards left corner, and its a great effort ... but not quite great enough. Judd, though, can't tidy, has to watch a few more balls disappear, and now needs three snookers.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-2 Wilson (15-58)

A pot sent diagonally up the table towards right corner ... stays out. But Judd is snookered on all three remaining reds and leaving them all safe won't be easy, so a counter is a way away – all the more so when his first escape misses. The second, though, hits, so on we go.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-2 Wilson (15-51)

...a cut-back down the side into the yellow bag ... and it's there. This looks a lot like 3-1.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-2 Wilson (15-51)

And he's doing a decent job of it, a blue punched to middle allowing him to separate two reds coming around the angles. The next pot, though, is not an easy one...

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-2 Wilson (15-12)

A pink needing cut to middle ... holds its line! I imagine Judd expected a little roll-off, but these new tables are true and now Gary has a chance to build – the kind you feel he must take if he's to win this.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-2 Wilson (14-11)

One by Gary, who sends a skinny one to middle, only to undercut a green – by a way - and that is going to cost him.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-2 Wilson (8-10)

Judd looks to send a starter long to the green bag ... great pot. And he then drains a tricky black before taking on another taxing red ... not only missing but going in-off. Gary, though, cannons the brown looking to attack the pack, so it's back to baulk for a safety-exchange.

World Championship LIVE - on table two

Chris Wakelin 1-1 Liam Pullen
In frame two, Liam had a lead of 60-odd, but couldn't see it out and was reeled back in; welcome to The Cruce

World Championship LIVE - Trump 1-2 Wilson

Might we look back on this frame as a key one? Gary had the chance to go three ahead, botched it, and now, after Judd gets back in, his deficit has been halved. Never give a genius an even break.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-2 Wilson (64-22)

Now then. A mistake from Judd allows Gary an opener and, given the whereabouts of the balls, this is a really good chance for him to go 3-0 up. Gosh, but must as I'm about to update, he loses the white, which lands too close to a red for him to pot one. Relief for The Ace.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-2 Wilson (64-0)

In what feels like seconds – which I guess it is, given all time can be measured in that way – Judd takes himself close to the frame, a red sunk bridging awkwardly seemingly the final obstacle. But then he runs off the blue into the pack, so with 83 left, it's back to baulk.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-2 Wilson (23-0)

Judd sinks a nice starter and quickly builds a lead. He won't be wanting to lose another frame, especially not another in which he's at the table potting, so this is maximum concentration time.

World Championship LIVE - on table two

Chris Wakelin 0-1 Liam Pullen

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-2 Wilson

Gary clears to the black and couldn't have asked for a better start, a one-visit kill and a nasty pilfer. Judd is in a match.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-1 Wilson (47-45)

Judd tries to clip that available red to left corner, cannot ... and Gary can. He's on the black too, which allows him to access the reds on the cushion, and Judd will be concerned; rightly so. And all the more when he gets himself down the table for the yellow; this is going to be a steal, colours from brown to black on their spots.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-1 Wilson (47-23)

This was never likely to be a frame salvageable in one visit, and when Gary sinks a further starter, he closes the gap by a little more, bringing another red into play before again playing safe; the other two remain on black cush.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-1 Wilson (47-18)

But he clips in a fine starter and eliminates easy balls, before playing safe when they run out.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-1 Wilson (47-0)

Left an unmissable plant, Gary snaps it down, but doesn't land on a colour and, with four reds on rails, it'll take some serious work to salvage the frame from here.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-1 Wilson (47-0)

But looking to stick a regulation blue into the yellow bag, he misses the pot ... getting lucky when the missed ball runs up the table and blocks access to reds. He sits down with a lead that's handy but not definitive.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-1 Wilson (46-0)

Judd builds nicely, then has to cue over a red to send a pink to middle ... and does so adroitly. From here, he should level us up.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-1 Wilson (17-0)

Part of me wonders whether mentally, Gary is impervious enough to beat Judd over the stretch at the Cruce, and he immediately invites him into frame two, leaving a mid-ranger to left corner. There aren't, though, many loose balls, so he'll soon have to break the pack.

World Championship LIVE - on table two

Chris Wakelin 0-0 Liam Pullen
But Liam, just 20 and making his Crucible debut, is at the table, frame secure. Angles picked him to win this, and he's started well.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-1 Wilson

Gary can't bin a red down the side, but he'll take a 77 and the lead.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-0 Wilson (0-64)

This has been very competent from Gary, a pink to corner putting the frame beyond doubt, and issuing Judd with a warning: you miss, I hit.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-0 Wilson (0-46)

Gary is a terrific potter and made the quarters here last term, so he knows he can perform on the biggest stage. I actually think Judd would prefer to face him over an even longer stretch, giving his superior quality time to take effect; in a race to 10, a streaky player like Gaz can hit a seam and make things very unpleasant.

World Championship LIVE - Trump 0-0 Wilson (0-14)

Judd might feel that his biggest advantage in this contest is his safety game ... so of course, as I type, he catches one thick – no, thickly, it's Dom and his precise grammar in co-comms – leaving Gary a chance to get going.

World Championship LIVE - Trump v Wilson

Our boyz baize, and off we go.

World Championship LIVE - Trump v Wilson

How on earth has Judd Trump only won one of these? It's a question that, much as he protests to the contrary, will be bothering him on a regular.
Perhaps, though, this season he's timed his run well, saving himself for the biggun rather than winning loads of everything else and arriving at the Cruce having already played his best stuff.
However, and this is a big however, Gary Wilson is about as tough an opening draw as was out there. He's in form, having come through qualifying and won a thriller in the final round, and when he's feeling confident, as he must surely be, he's capable of beating anyone. This is going to be good.
Judd Trump kicks off his World Snooker Championship campaign against Gary Wilson at the Crucible on Tuesday morning.
Trump, the current world No. 1, is eyeing his second world title having previously taken the crown in 2019.
He last reached the final in 2022, when he was beaten by Ronnie O'Sullivan.
