Jimmy White suffers more Crucible agony in losing to Robert Milkins on final black at World Seniors Snooker Championship - 'Oh no!'

Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White lost six world finals at the Crucible between 1984 and 1994, but discovered more agony at the celebrated Sheffield venue in losing on the final black to Robert Milkins.

With the World Seniors Snooker Championship last-16 match finely poised at 3-3, with the former UK Championship and Masters winner compiling 86 to level up, the contest went straight to a black-ball shoot-out rather than a deciding frame.

Record four-time seniors winner White tried to double the black down the length of the table, but watched in horror as the black stuck in the jaws of the yellow bag enabling 'The Milkman' to complete a 4-3 victory.

"Oh no! That's always the gamble when you play it that way," said former Welsh Open winner Joe Perry on commentary. "For a moment there, I thought it was in."

White had earlier described the Crucible as "the best venue in the world" as he opened his bid for a fifth crown with a 4-1 win over Daniel Ward.

"It is so great to be back playing here," said White on Channel 5. "It is the best venue in the world.

"I'm playing okay, I missed a couple. But I'm delighted to be here, and playing the game I love.

"And occasionally not too bad."

The 1986 world champion and TNT Sports pundit Joe Johnson was impressed with White's long game and break-building, which saw him produce three breaks over 50.

"He couldn't play much [better] Jimmy," said Johnson. "That's good snooker."

Milkins will face Brazil's Igor Figueiredo in the quarter-finals on Friday after the 2024 winner ended Shoot Out champion Alfie Burden's title defence with a 4-0 whitewash victory that included efforts of 68, 56 and 72.

Meanwhile, 1997 world champion Doherty will face snooker GOAT Ronnie O'Sullivan in the last 16 at 14:00 on Friday after completing a 4-3 win over Gerard Greene boosted by breaks of 88 and 50.

Elsewhere, two-time world finalist Ali Carter began his campaign with a 4-2 win against Roger Farebrother of Australia in the last 16 to set up a quarter-final meeting with Nigel Bond or Craig Steadman.

And in the all-Welsh clash in the last 16, Matthew Stevens defeated Dominic Dale 4-2 on Thursday evening despite Dale producing a 101 break in the fifth frame.

2015 world champion Stuart Bingham faces Peter Lines in the last 16 on Friday at 12:00 after Lines completed a 4-2 win over Anthony Hamilton.
