Kyren Wilson booked his place in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals with a narrow victory over Ronnie O'Sullivan while Judd Trump defeated Barry Hawkins. Earlier in the day, there were two impressive comeback victories, as Mark Williams beat Chris Wakelin and Neil Robertson saw off Xiao Guodong.

Wilson kept his Shanghai Masters title defence alive as he defeated O'Sullivan 6-4 in a high-quality battle to reach the quarter-finals.

The Warrior raced into a 3-1 lead, but the Rocket found three century breaks in a row to come back into the match. However, Wilson found his level once more to take the last three frames for victory and set up a clash with Mark Williams.

On the other table, 2024 champion Trump booked his place in the third round with a 6-4 win over Hawkins, including a 138 break to edge into the lead in the ninth frame.

Trump gets out of it via the cushion. Hawkins unsuccessfully hides behind the black but Trump cannot pot.

The Hawk tries to pot the brown, but misses. Trump can get the brown now and he does into the centre pocket! That will be that.

Wilson takes his time to assess his situation, before taking another safety shot. He has been far more defensive now that he's behind in the match.

There is a red on the left cushion that is technically on, but neither player wants to take such a large risk. Wilson snookers O'Sullivan right behind the yellow.

O'Sullivan cuts well on the red, then the yellow to take the lead. This frame could get cagey given the placement of the reds.

However, the Rocket breaks up the pack nicely after potting the yellow and has given himself a chance of levelling up.

Williams triumphed in the afternoon session, coming from 3-0 down to beat Chris Wakelin 6-5.

In the other match this session, the winner of Trump v Hawkins will face the winner of tomorrow's match between John Higgins and Jack Lisowski.

A repeat of last year's quarter-final

These two met in the quarter-final last year, and it was Wilson who was the 6-3 winner.

O'Sullivan made a strong start, moving 2-1 up, only losing a frame on a respotted black, but Wilson reeled off five of the next six frames to ease into the semi-finals.

The pair met again two weeks later in the Saudi Arabia Masters quarter-final, where O'Sullivan exacted revenge with a 6-5 victory, with three century breaks

Williams battles back from the brink against Wakelin

Mark Williams edged out Chris Wakelin in a seesaw thriller to book his place in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals.

Wakelin shot out to a 3-0 lead early on, as he soon found his rhythm and limited Williams to just three balls potted in two frames.

Yet just when it looked like the Englishman could disappear out of sight, Williams got on the board before the break.

He continued that form on the other side too, taking his average shot time down to 20 seconds and keeping Wakelin almost completely away from the table for four of the next five frames.

Williams looked set to blast away to victory when he took a 5-4 lead with a century break but Wakelin showed impressive reslience to force a deciding frame, which saw both players unable to recapture the free-flowing snooker from earlier.

However, after Williams gave Wakelin one final lifeline at 65-0 down, he soon sealed the match and can now look forward to the last eight.

Robertson has all but won! He pots the remaining reds, then gets yellow and green to seal the deal. It's the second major comeback of the day, Xiao will play on but he looks like his heart's not in it.

He might've clinched it! Robertson screws the cue down the table, opening up the angle on those pesky reds that Xiao was so nervous to touch.

It's his for the taking now.

How's he done that, then? Xiao took to a table offering plenty of options but he missed a blue cut, only taking one from the break and opening the door back up to Robertson.

The issue is three reds and the black and sat at the bottom of the table - will The Thunder from Down Under go for broke or attempt to force Xiao into a mistake?

The Australian will want that shot back! He completely misjudges the cannon onto the pink leaving him with no good options to continue scoring.

Instead, Robertson is forced to play a safety.

Xiao could've been out of sight by now but a couple of costly errors, including stunning the cue ball when he had nowhere else to aim, mean Robertson can begin what could be a match-winning break.

However, two balls are trapped on the bottom cushion and the black is out of bounds right now.

And the other match this morning has also gone to a decider Robertson and Xiao are locked in a safety battle right now.

Williams 6-5 Wakelin (81-0)

So close! Wakelin scattered the remaining reds and was an inch away from getting to stay on! But ultimately the red remains on the table, allowing Williams to easily put the match out of sight!

He clinches a fantastic comeback victory, after Wakelin looked so smooth early on and then showed such fight to take the match to a deciding frame.

Yet in the end, The Welsh Potting Machine was just too good and he's the first player into the quarter-finals!

Williams' break comes up just short, after rattling through his shots the Welshman was flummoxed by a really difficult angle on the red and he couldn't cut it far enough to nestle in the middle pocked.

However, it still might be enough, all the pressure is on Wakelin now...

He might've just done it! Williams successfully cannons into the reds and there's nothing that has to stop him now. He's enjoying living on the black and blue so far.

Williams risks a medium-range pot and it pays off, putting him in the driving seat for the frame! He follows it up with a pair of blacks, but he'll need to open up the red cluster sooner rather than later.

I'll be honest, I didn't see that coming. We are off to a deciding frame!

Wakelin saved his best play since the break for when it mattered most, dancing around the top of the table and nailing a cannon up to the baulk cushion that kept his frame alive.

One black is simply not good enough. Wakelin tries a brave cut on the black but as soon as the cue makes contact then it looked off.

His only saving grace is that Williams doesn't have anything obvious to attack on the table.

It's now or never for Wakelin! Williams gets caught on the jaws bottom-left, and he wasn't as consistent with the black as he has been earlier today meaning the break is only 21.

But that's still better than anything Wakelin has been able to come up with recently and if he doesn't change that soon then he will be out.

Williams cuts in a long red that he would've absolutely missed in the opening frames today, then follows it up with yellow and another red. However, the pink has been knocked off its spot so it will take a perfect shot to keep the break alive...

And Williams makes it! Alarm bells will be going off in Wakelin's head now.

Williams throws a lifeline! He tried to play into the green off the cushion but just misses, conceding a foul and three more points from Wakelin's next trip to the table.

The Welsh Potting Machine is living up his name with an average shot time that is a full five-seconds quicker than Wakelin, who looks bereft at the way the match has turned.

He's watched a 3-0 lead evaporate before his eyes and is now playing to stay in this tournament.

Both players made mistakes but Williams is the first to take advantage, the bottom-left pocket already had a red hugging one jaw yet he found a way to sneak another past it and get up and running.

Two blacks follow and the reds are scattered here - Williams could be about to take the lead for the first time since early in the opening frame!

We are level! And it's easy as you like, with Williams effortlessly sweeping up the reds around the black and completing his comeback from 3-0. Remember, that was only an hour or two ago.

When Williams has been tempted into the more ambitious shots then he's struggled but right now Wakelin hasn't been ruthless enough and he leaves the arena momentarily after the frame.

Wakelin is slipping out of the contest! Williams made a strong start to his break and though it petered out, Wakelin immediately invites him back to the table to rack up more points! We're headed for a tied match at this rate.

Not for the first time today, a brilliant shot is followed up with a head-scratching miss. Wakelin plays the angle perfectly to land a long red off the cushion, but misses a straightforward shot at the green with his very next go.

Williams does indeed seal the frame, and in style too!

He stuck to the pink in the second half of his break, potting metronomically, and finishes with a flourish when he bounces his final red coast-to-coast and in.

Williams' next shot was a bit of a damp squib by comparison, leaving the blue teetering on the edge of the pocket, but it's still enough to keep him squarely in the match.

Cue the Jaws music! Williams potted the black four times to open up a commanding lead and when it's time to split up the remaining reds... he nails it!

He's had several false dawns this match so it's no guarantee he'll clinch the frame, but there is simply no reason Williams' break has to end prematurely now.

Wakelin delivers! Williams had left the final red perfectly positioned, and the Englishman had little trouble knocking in the rest of the balls from their spots to restore his two-frame lead.

It was all going so well!

Williams maximised the reds at the bottom of the table and then did the really hard part, working up and screwing back hard to pot both the green and the dastardly red hiding behind it.

However, Williams fell at the last big hurdle - potting red in the bottom-right corner off the cushion - and it'd be a shock if Wakelin loses the frame from here.

Once again, while it's not particularly smooth from Wakelin, it certainly is effective!

The break of 28 is close to Williams' best in the opening four frames as the Englishman feasts on the black before landing himself in a spot of bother, hemmed in by the remainder of the red cluster.

Williams will return to the table but he'll struggle to get the break past the 20s with the way the reds are positioned - one on the cushion and one right behind the green.

Wakelin potted four more balls but he never really looked in the zone and when the time came to plant a red in as Williams did so coolly in the previous frame, he wasn't even close.

THAT'S the break Williams has been chasing all match! He came out of the break a different player and clinches the fifth frame with a masterful break of 83.

Williams potted the black five times, expertly screwing back to keep his reds open and the real winning shot was a plant into middle left to keep the break going once he hit 60.

Cameras cut to to Williams after Wakelin has worked his way back down the table following a blue-green combination, and The Welsh Potting Machine looks utterly despondent.

Wakelin is right in the flow now, he potted five blacks and four pinks en route to the first century of the match and he's opened up a commanding lead in this best-of-11 contest.

Once again, Wakelin takes advantage with a better look on the table. After nailing a pink, he mounts for an awkward pot and follows it up with two blacks, before cannoning brown into the reds and leaving Williams snookered behind two balls.

Wakelin gets us up and running in the third frame, though Williams hits the front for the first time since midway through the first by sneaking a red.

He's able to follow it up with an impressive brown cut but the table offers little from there and he's forced to settle.

Wakelin is well into his stride now. He surgically clinches the frame and then keeps going, landing a confident yellow top-right before he eventually fouls to hand Williams a shred of respectability in the frame, alongside a doubled deficit.

The players have certainly carried their form from the first frame into this one as once again, the jaws deny Williams on a long pot and open the door to Wakelin.

He nails his red off the cushion and with the table looking inviting, the Englishman is well on his way to opening up a 2-0 lead.

It was all going so well for Wakelin, until it wasn't. He thumped home a blue and was suddenly stranded, opting to break open the reds a tad more.

Though not straight away. He nails a black, screws back off blue and THEN makes his move, potting black and cannoning the reds open. This looks set to be a much shorter frame...

Wakelin knocks in another high-quality long pot, this time the blue, and Williams duly concedes the frame.

Both players know they can play a lot better than this so the match is still all to play for, yet it's Wakelin who holds the slender advantage after frame one.

In a frame of such inconsistent quality, Wakelin landed the pot of the day so far to inch further ahead, slamming home an ultra-long green.

He follows up with the brown but is left stranded there, this one will come down to the wire.

The pendulum swings again. Wakelin pots the white and Williams compounds the error with a nervy safety shot, yet it's the Welshman who loses the patience game, attempting an ambitious long pot that leaves his opponent with an easy red to extend his lead.

And Wakelin duly does, potting blue-yellow and then hitting a safety. All the reds are now off the table.

It's yet another error in the opening frame, this time by Wakelin who misjudges a safety shot and gives up four points when he doesn't make contact with the red.

Wakelin hits the front for the first time in the match, potting a pair of pinks and a pair of blues, including a fantastic thin to keep the break alive.

However, he's denied the first frame by the bottom right pocket, which rejects his red and leaves the Englishman stranded on a break of 26.

Then Williams knocks in that ball but can't kick on.

Williams got away with his last miss, and he's survived another scare here! You can tell it's early season, as Wakelin finds the jaws with a tricky but manageable blue thin.

It's been a wasteful start. Williams potted red but then has a howler, striking the jaws with black from close range to allow his opponent back into the frame for a second time.

Wakelin digs in, first he thins in a red, then pots an awkward yellow and follows it up with the red that just denied Williams.

Wakelin cannons the cue off blue into the cluster but he didn't leave anything else on so is left to play a weak safety, ending a frustrating break.

The Welshman will want that back. He was bobbing along nicely in the lower half of the table but then attempted a long red up to the top left and strikes the jaws, handing an unlikely opening to Wakelin!

Chris Wakelin won the last encounter 6-4 at the International Championship but Mark Williams leads the head-to-head 2-1.
