Watch bizarre standoff that left Daniel Wells fuming against Si Jiahui at Xi'an Grand Prix - 'We're going to be here all day'

"This is going to take forever," Daniel Wells complained as a curious moment arose during his third-round battle at the Xi'an Grand Prix with Si Jiahui. In the seventh frame and with the scores level at 3-3, 13 reds were bunched up over the bottom right pocket, with the black right over the bag and blocking their path. Wells wanted a re-rack, but Si did not want to forfeit his 17-point lead.

There was a peculiar and slightly confusing scenario at the 2025 Xi'an Grand Prix on Thursday.

Daniel Wells was taking on Si Jiahui in the third round, and the pair were locked at 3-3 after the first six frames of the encounter.

Welshman Wells struck breaks of 53 and 85 to help himself to a 3-0 advantage, before Si hit back with three frames of his own, which included a brilliant total clearance of 139.

But it was in the seventh frame where the big talking point of the match took place. Si built an early 17-0 advantage in the frame. However, the remaining reds quickly began to gather around the bottom right pocket.

After numerous safety shots between the two players - who were trying to avoid knocking in the black ball hanging over the pocket within the pack - a number of the 13 reds left on the table became increasingly tight to the cushions either side of the pocket.

The duo continued to play safe but were not getting anywhere, when Wells finally lost his patience with the situation and broke the silence.

"This is going to take forever," he said, flapping his arms in the air. "He's only on 17 points. How long? How long are we going to hit this black? If you pot the red, you can't pot the black. 17 points is nothing."

Wells rolled another lacklustre safety shot into the pack and then quickly continued his rant as he argued that there were grounds for a re-rack.

"The black is never going to go in, and even if it does go in, all the reds are there anyway," Wells said as he cast his eye over the table. "It's just going to take forever."

Trying to figure out a solution, he said: "A re-rack, yeah? Just go and speak to the head referee. We're going to be here all day."

However, Si gestured towards the foot of the table where the scoreboard is positioned, as if to suggest he was not willing to forfeit his 17-point advantage.

"It doesn't matter, we're going to be here all day," Wells said in response. "17 points is two reds and blacks. It's just not going to move."

Eventually, Si carelessly struck the cue ball with pace into the bunch, which forced the black to drop into the pocket, with the remaining reds still bunched together, and he said to Wells: "OK?"

Wells seemed confused and asked, "What do you mean, OK? A deliberate foul, you're not allowed to make a deliberate foul, you'll lose the frame."

Si was heard arguing that "it was just a safety", which Wells begrudgingly agreed with, shaking his head before getting on with the frame.

A gap opened up, which allowed him to thunder one of the reds into the pocket, which spread plenty of the others.

Eventually, Wells claimed the frame 91-33 to retake the lead in the match.

Wells also took the eighth frame to book his place in the fourth round, where he will meet Robert Milkins on Friday.
