KURTZ CUTS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD WITH FIRST WIN

Brady Kurtz celebrated winning his first FIM Speedway Grand Prix in Gorzow and cut the championship lead of Bartosz Zmarzlik to 11 points.

Australian rookie Kurtz has burst onto the speedway scene this season and has reached four finals.

However, the 29-year-old was yet to stand on the podium top spot when he headed to Poland for the sixth round.

Defending world champion and five-time winner of the series Zmarzlik was looking to extend his overall lead on a track he knows well.

Zmarzlik cruised through to the final after finishing top of the standings following the heats. Meanwhile, Kurtz had to beat Fredrik Lindgren in his final heat to automatically qualify for the final in second place.

Lindgren and Dan Bewley progressed through the last chance qualifiers so that the top four riders overall battled in the final.

It was Kurtz who got the quickest start and despite being chased down by Zmarzlik, he held on for his first Grand Prix victory.

After winning the Sprint event earlier in the day, Brewley gave his points tally a boost by finishing third in the final and Lindgren was fourth.

The FIM Speedway Grand Prix continues with round seven in Malilla, Sweden, on July 5.

KURTZ REFLECTS ON ‘BEST MOMENT’ OF CAREER

Brady Kurtz took his first FIM Speedway Grand Prix victory which he said was "definitely the best moment" of his career.

"It definitely feels better than the second, third and fourth that I’ve already had," he told TNT Sports.

"I want to hopefully win some more, we will see. I’ll enjoy tonight first before worrying about the next coming weeks.

"I’ve just got to thank my team so much in the pits, they’ve been unbelievable, my dad and brother here, my mum and girlfriend watching at home, I’m so grateful.

"All I could hear was Bartosz’s bike for four laps, I think my bike was silent. I knew he was coming every lap. I was counting the laps down, I finally saw the chequered flag. It was definitely the best moment of my career so far."

BEWLEY REFLECTS ON THIRD

Dan Bewley has reflected on his third-placed finish in Gorzow and winning the Sprint race earlier in the day.

He said: "It was a good couple of points on the board.

"Congratulations to Brady for his first win, he has been close a few times. I thought I had a decent start from gate three and thought that I nearly had him, but I didn’t.

"All in all it has been a good day. I always love this track, I’ve really enjoyed it. I would have liked to have won, but it has been good."

FINAL – LINDGREN, BEWLEY, KURTZ, ZMARZLIK

Kurtz has the quickest start and is challenged by Bewley on the opening corners. Looking for his first GP win Kurtz has a healthy lead.

Zmarzlik passes Bewley but cannot catch Kurtz who holds on to win his first GP. Zmarzlik has to settle for second on his home turf and Bewley is third.

LAST CHANCE QUALIFIER 2 – BEWLEY, HOLDER, FRICKE, THOMSEN

Again, from the inside it is Bewley who starts quickest. Thomsen is in second as Fricke and Holder battle behind.

Bewley is through to the final, while Thomsen finishes second and Fricke takes third.

LAST CHANCE QUALIFIER 1 – LINDGREN, KVECH, DOYLE, MICHELSEN

Lindgren has the perfect opening from the inside gate and takes the lead. Kvech’s night is over as he comes to a stop on the first lap.

Doyle has to settle for second and Michelsen is third. Lindgren books his place in tonight’s final.

Those who have not qualified from the last chance qualifiers. Here is their positions tonight:

It is Zmarzlik and Kurtz who qualify straight into the final. The remaining top-10 riders will compete in the last chance qualifier – with the winner from each going through to the final.

HEAT 20 – LINDGREN, FRICKE, KURTZ, KOWALKSI

Lindgren and Kurtz battle for a top two finish. Australian Kurtz starts quickly and comes under rival Lindgren with a committed move.

Kurtz then powers away to win ahead of Lindgren in second and Fricke in third.

HEAT 19 – DOYLE, BEWLEY, HOLDER, KVECH

Kvech leads but comes under pressure from Doyle who has a perfect second turn. Doyle keeps challenging Kvech but fails to make his move on the leader stick.

Doyle then collides with Kvech and sends his opponent flying into the barrier. Doyle is judged to have been at fault and is disqualified from the re-run.

From the re-start Holder holds the front from a challenging Bewley. The British rider struggles to find a way through before Holder eventually gaps his opponent to win, Bewley is second and Kvech third.

HEAT 18 – LAMBERT, THOMSEN, MALKIEWICZ, ZMARZLIK

From the inside Zmarzlik makes the perfect start to lead. However, the World Champion makes a mistake and just holds his lead from Lambert.

Thomsen is distanced in third and Malkiewicz’s bike stops working again. Zmarzlik books his final place with another win.

HEAT 17 – PALUCH, KUBERA, LEBEDEVS, MICHELSEN

Michelsen could be already out of tonight’s competition and makes a perfect start. Kubera also needed a win, but is distanced in fourth.

Michelsen wins ahead of Paluch who finishes a close second and Lebedevs in third.

The top two after the last heats go straight into the final. Meanwhile, third to 10th go into the last chance qualifier.

HEAT 16 – DOYLE, ZMARZLIK, KOWALSKI, MICHELSEN

The World Champion sends it from the inside gate and is unstoppable. Behind Doyle and Michelsen trade blows in the battle for second position.

Zmarzlik is out of sight at the front, Doyle finishes second and Michelsen third.

HEAT 15 – KVECH, LINDGREEN, LEBEDEVS, MALKIEWICZ

Reserve rider Malkiewicz starts in the place of Huckenbeck. Lindgren with a lovely move around the outside on the first lap which gives him a comfortable win.

Kvech has second place ahead of Lebedevs, while Malkiewicz hardly got off the start before his bike stopped with a mechanical.

HEAT 14 – LAMBERT, BEWLEY, KUBERA, FRICKE

Bewley flies out of the middle gate to lead. Meanwhile, Fricke and Lambert almost collide in the battle for second. It is the Australian who edges clear for second behind Bewley and Lambert is third.

HEAT 13 – PALUCH, THOMSEN, HOLDER, KURTZ

Kurtz has a perfect start from a middle gate and has a clear lead. Behind Holder and Thomsen are locked in a tense battle for second position.

Kurtz takes a convincing win ahead of Thomsen and Holder in third.

HUCKENBECK AND VACULIK OUT

Following the big crash earlier in this meeting both Kai Huckenbeck and Martin Vaculik are out of tonight’s meeting due to injury and have been replaced by reserves.

HEAT 12 – BEWLEY, KOWALSKI, LEBEDEVS, THOMSEN

Bewley takes the early lead before Lebedevs comes under Thomsen in the battle for second. The elbows are out and Lebedevs drifts across his opponent resulting in Thomsen flying into the barriers. The heat is stopped.

Thomsen is the rider who has been controversially disqualified as Lebedevs is allowed to take the re-start. Thomsen goes straight to phone the referee and is furious with their decision.

Reserve rider Kowalski starts quickest from the re-start and it is Bewley and Lebedevs battling behind.

Bewley comes through off the final corner and snatches the win from Kowalski and Lebedevs is third.

HEAT 11 – KVECH, KUBERA, ZMARZLIK, KURTZ

A frantic heat as Kubera leads early on only to come under pressure from Zmarzlik. The World Champion holds the inside on the last lap and takes the lead.

However, Kubera comes flying out of the last turn and almost takes Zmarzlik on the line. Zmarzlik just did enough to win from Kubera and Kurtz in third.

HEAT 10 – HOLDER, MICHELSEN, LINDGREN, LAMBERT

Holder takes the front position and is not to be denied a heat victory. Lindgren tries to battle on the last lap but cannot come through. In third position was Michelsen, while Lambert suffered from a poor start from the outside gate.

HEAT 9 – PALUCH, DOYLE, FRICKE, HUCKENBECK

Doyle holds the front on the opening lap from Fricke who nicely spotted a gap through his opponents.

Australian Doyle is not to be denied in this heat and beat countryman Fricke into second and Paluch finishes third. Doyle needed that win as he hopes the climb the championship standings.

HEAT 8 – VACULIK, KUBERA, HOLDER, HUCKENBECK

A huge crash into the opening turn as Vaculik loses his bike after a collision with Kubera, the latter rider's bike flies into Huckenbeck and sends him into the fence. That looked a painful crash for both riders and there are some anxious faces in the crowd.

Huckenbeck is back on his feet. Vaculik has been disqualified from the heat, but will not take any further part tonight and is helped into an ambulance with an injury.

Huckenbeck looks in some pain as he takes the re-start.

Kubera takes the front and then leaves the door open for Holder on the inside. However, the Polish rider regains the front and wins the heat from Holder in second and Huckenbeck third.

HEAT 7 – KVECH, THOMSEN, FRICKE, MICHELSEN

Michelsen starts well from gate two and gabs the inside. However, Kvech finds some rapid pace and passes the leader.

Fricke also comes through into second, while Thomsen takes third. Michelsen will be wondering how that went so wrong.

HEAT 6 – LAMBERT, DOYLE, LEBEDEVS, KURTZ

Kurtz holds the lead from the inside and leaves the rest behind. Lebedevs tries to chase the leader, while Lambert almost loses his bike in third.

Despite making a mistake Kurtz wins from Lebedevs and Lambert in third.

HEAT 5 – PALUCH, LINDGREN, ZMARZLIK, BEWLEY

The track grading has resulted in some water being left on the start. From the outside gate Zmarzlik comes across the pack and collides with Paluch.

That leaves the door open for Bewley to take the lead from Lindgren. Bewley makes no mistake to win the heat from Lindgren and Zmarzlik.

Huckenbeck powers through from gate three to take a clear lead. Kurtz spots a gap to move into second. After winning the sprint earlier today Bewley is left behind Michelsen in third.

HEAT 3 – ZMARZLIK, LEBEDEVS, FRICKE, HOLDER

A three-way battle for the lead is won by Zmarzlik from gate three, while an intense battle develops behind. Fricke and Holder are trading blows and Lebedevs is also there.

Holder comes around the outside to beat Fricke on the line for second.

HEAT 2 – LINDGREN, DOYLE, THOMSEN, KUBERA

Lindgren leads away from the lime but has Thomsen in close pursuit. Doyle is left battling with Kubera for third. It is Lindgren who holds the lead from Thomsen and Doyle.

HEAT 1 – PALUCH, LAMBERT, KVECH, VACULIC

Wild card Oskar Paluch has a tough first heat. Kvech and Vaculic go head-to-head on the first corner with the former holding his ground.

Kvech holds the front position and Vaculic is a close second with Lambert third.

LINDGREN WON AT SAME VENUE LAST YEAR

Fredrik Lindgren broke the hearts of the Polish fans last year at Gorzow when he get the better of home favourite Bartosz Zmarzlik.

However, they both might have a challenge from Dan Bewley who won the sprint race earlier today.

ZMARZLIK WINS LAST WEEKEND IN GREAT BRITAIN

Bartosz Zmarzlik returned to winning ways at the Speedway GP of Great Britain last Sunday, dominating proceedings after an impressive evening of racing.

Brady Kurtz ended the night in second after an impressive ride in the final heat, bouncing back to finish P2 after starting from the second gate.

Fredrik Lindgren took third, unable to convert his inside gate start into victory, as he leaves Round 5 with some frustration.
